I knew that Mrs. and Mr. Starling leave Darwin soon.
I saw the following pictures on Facebook.

Our farewell trip to 4 Mile Hole in Kakadu on Saturday was a ripper, with 51 barra and 5 toga landed, mostly taken while sight-casting small to middling hard bodies at surface cruising schools of fish.. (quote from her facebook)

Fish of the day were in the mid-70s, but we dropped a few slightly bigger. (quote from his facebook)

I'm always thinking that I want to find my own family fishing like a "The Starling".

I had an opportunity to see Steve in February 2012 first.
Naturally, I've known that he's a very famous person in Australia's fishing.
I feel that he's a very simple and sincere person.
I think that I'm given some very nice opportunities directly and indirectly by Steve.
Especially, I could participate in a match of BBBDHI in July 2012.
I've no boat now, however, I could join the tournament as an only land based angler.

We were surprised at the world-record sized Queen fish caught by Steve in Darwin harbour in June 2012.

We understood that Australia's No.1 fishing journalist was a super angler with an extremely skilled  technique.

And I thought that he's probably loved by Gods of fishing very much.

We see many articles and columns on magazines, newspapers and websites by Steve.

He's been showing us a large variety of our fishing targets.

Even Mullet became his main target fish.

This fishing activity of Steve is now my guiding principle in my fishing life.

I mainly use SHIMANO fishing reels.

I like Daiwa and Abu too, but after all, I'll keep using SHIMANO mainly because Mr. Steve STARLO Starling uses SHIMANO.

The Best Fishing in Darwin 114cm (130cm) Queenfish on fly Mr. Steve STARLO Starling

I guarantee,
This is the best fish and the best fishing in Darwin in 2012.

I know that "Guarantee" is a very big word in English.

The best fishing in Darwin.

Mr. Steve STARLO Starling commented on his Facebook as follows,

The fishing gods smiled on me this afternoon and let me land one of those genuine "fish of a lifetime" we all dream about... I could count on one hand the angling encounters I've had that have made me shake as much as this one did, and doing it on a 9 weight fly rod made it doubly memorable. Casting a nondescript little #1 Clouser towards rocks at the western end of Channel Island in Darwin Harbour, I connected with the biggest queenfish I've ever seen — in flesh or photo. Half a wild hour later, this giant queenie sadly had barely a kick left in it at boat-side, effectively ruling out a release, so I'll be getting a wall mount made. For the statistically minded, this amazing specimen was 130cm long overall, 114cm nose-to-fork and weighed a whisker over 16 kilos... The photos don't show the thickness through its head and shoulders... Those repeated, explosive jumps are forever etched on my cerebral cortex I am still trembling as I type this!

The Barra, Bass and Bream Digest Harbourmasters Invitational Land-Based division Mr. Steve STARLO Starling

The Barra, Bass & Bream Digest Harbourmasters Invitational is a unique one-day fishing tournament staged each year on the waters of Darwin Harbour.


This year's BBBDHI is set down for Saturday, 21st July, 2012. Watch this page over the coming month or so for posting of the "expression of interest" form that you will need to fill out to nominate a team.

Barra Bass & Bream Digest harbourmasters Invitational

Mr. Steve STARLO Starling has decided as follows,

We've been thinking more about the concept of a land-based division in this year's BBBDHI and here's the draft as it currently stands:
The Land Based Division would be run as a separate section of the comp' and entrants would fish as individuals rather than in two-person teams. Therefore, their entry fee is halved (so, if the Team Entry for 2 anglers is $50, the individual entry fee for land base...d competitors is $25). We reckon we'd need a minimum of 10 land based anglers to make it viable. So, the prize pool would be a minimum of $250, less the 10% admin fee = $225. That pool increases if we get more land-based anglers.
Otherwise, the rules for the land-based division are exactly the same: fly and lure only, catch-and-release, best bream and barra combined length (no minimum lengths), one species doesn't count without the other. Winner (individual with highest combined length of best barra and best bream) takes the entire cash pot. And, in the unlikely event that NO land-based anglers catch both species, the cash pool goes to the angler with longest of either species (most likely a barra)... What does everyone think? Please give us your feedback!

Big Tarpon on fly Rainy Season Mr. Steve STARLO Starling

I know this point very well.
I enjoied catching Tarpon and Flathead here before I was crazy about Barramundi fishing.

But I've never caught any 50cm+ big Tarpon here.
Those tarpon's average sizes were 30cm - 40cm.
Tarpon was always a very nice fighting fish.

Mr. Steve STARLO Starling caught very big-size Tarpon.
He got a cracking tarpon on fly in the harbour on 5th. March: 52cm fork, 60 to tail tips.
And he said he was headed out again on 6th. March to do battle with the big tarpon from his boat.

Gotta love big Indo-Pacific tarpon on fly! Few fish pull harder on a kilo-for-kilo basis, in my opinion. Thanks to Dave Krantz for snapping the pic in the heat of battle, and Brett Wilson for his great little fly!



I've never tried fly-fishing.
I can guess that it must be very exciting.


By the way,
When I caught Tarpon here, I always used Classic Lures/Red head and Bomber/Red head.
These lures did work!

I recommend these above lures for Tarpon fishing in the night time.
Classic Lures should be shallow-dive bibs better than thi above picture.
Bomber Long A 14A/Red head should be better than 15A here.
Twitch, twitch and twitch!

Barramundi here don't like any big actions of lures, therefore, I use a steady retrieving for catching them.

RAPALA FLATRAP One of the best Barramundi lure Who found it first? Mr. Phil Newton

Hello Hiro. You have done well on a hard day! I am headed out again this evening to do battle with the big tarpon under the Jetty restaurant (from my boat). I'll let you know how I go. There are many barra there, too, but they are very hard to fool!

No, I have no business ties with Rapala, but I like their product very much. The 8cm Flat Rap is my new favourite hard bodied lure for barra. Phil Newton who used to work in Fishing & Outdoor World introduced me to the Flat Rap. Do you know Phil? He is a very fine angler.

You are probably surprised that I use many other lures besides Squidgies. This is important for my writing and also so that I can help to constantly evolve better and better Squidgies!

I enjoyed the photos on your blog recently of earlier fishing you did in Darwin, especially the jewfish off the jetty! Great catch! What jetty was that? Also, tuna from the shore! Impressive.

In a few weeks time I will take you to the jungle streams of sooty grunter, if you like? I have a long trip to Exmouth (WA) first.

I was surprised that Mr. Phil Newton who used to work in Fishing & Outdoor World introduced Mr. Steve STARLO Starling to the Flat Rap.

Very nice Barramundi was caught by Mr. Phil Newton.

It was purely by chance that Mr. phil Newton introduced me to the Flatrap.

RAPALA FLATRAP really did work for catching Barramundi on the shore.

I thought, originally, RAPALA FLATRAP wasn't very populer in Barramundi fishing.

Who found that RAPALA FLATRAP should be very effective in catching Barramundi on the shallow water?

Mr. Phil Newton is regarded as the first person who found that RAPALA FLATRAP should be very effective in catching Barramundi to me.


This matter may cause an argument between the affirmative opinion and the negative opinion. ??(･_･*)(*･_･)(*~^~)/??

It doesn't matter. (*'ー'*)

I'd like to believe like that.

The Finniss floodplains Barramundi Run-off New RAPALA Fizzers Rainy Season Mrs. Jo Starling Mr. Steve Starling

Mrs. Jo Starling and Mr. Steve Starling have gone to "Run off".

I received e-mail from Steve.


Nice day up on the Finniss floodplains yesterday. It was a bit higher than we'd have preferred, but we landed 19 barra to just shy of 82cm and a bunch of tarpon. Best fish (81.5cm) was built like a brick outhouse and would have topped 20 pounds. It completely inhaled one of those new Rapala fizzers, smashing out the rear treble and prop in the process! Check the amazing "devil barra" colouration on Jo's 77... They are the neatest fish! Swamp dogs for sure, but full of attitude and zing, and living in some gorgeous country.

The ultimate land based fishing Saratoga & Sooty grunter Mr. Steve Starlo Starling

Being around 75km south east of Darwin?
The ultimate land based fishing there!
I don't know where it is.
But I've read his post about Barramundi and Saratoga on the website.
I don't know whether it is this location or not.
Anyhow, this is an another great land based fishing.

... reasonable saratoga, too. Just over 60cm. Hooked in a hole about the size of a spa bath and spent more time in the air than the water. Also on the Squidgy Soft Plastics Bug... lurv that Bug!

Cracked my PB sooty grunter today out of a small, overgrown jungle creek. Amazing fight in VERY tight water... I LOVE sooties! They'd pull a barra backwards. Took a Squidgy Soft Plastics Bug rigged on a little Finesse Head jig... near locked drag but it still took line. Bottomed out 4 pound scales. I'm guessing close to 2 kilos. Didn't get a length as I was keen to get it back in the drink.

I haven't known about this location very well.
I really want to try this land based fishing.
Probably, my scooter can't get there.

Firstly, I'm very sory about my wrong Englsh.


Mr. Steve Starling gave us a great idea as follows,

After catching up with Darwin Land-Based fishing legend Hiro this week we were wondering what people think... should we have a separate land-based division in this year's Barra Bass & Bream Digest Harbourmasters Invitational Would appreciate your feedback... Hiro, would you compete if there was a land-based section in the tournament? Would anyone else?

Mr. Steve Starling is a very big name in fishing of Australia.
He spent one hour half in fishing with me.
Probably everybody would be surprised at the location.
The water wasn't very clean.
It's a very minor field of fishing.
However, he walked around all water sides and checked environment there.


Darwin sea isn't a good water to swim safe because of Box Jelly Fish and Crocodiles.
But it's one of the best land based fishing water near the functional city in the world.
That is what I have long been contemplating.


Thanks to his great idea, many people will know about the amazing land based fishing in the region of Darwin city.
Probably, government will think over again about keeping environment very good for the land based fishing.

I think urbanrenewal and good environment for the land based fishing will be compatible with each other in Darwin. There are some ways out of this dilemma.

Otherwise, this environment of the land based barramundi and bream fishing will be on the decline sooner than we have expected because of urban renewal and municipal waste.

I thought he's so busy every day.
So I didn't expect a good answer from him.

Yes, please feel free to put the Channel Point pic up on your blog. Those fish were caught at Channel Point in May, 2011 on a falling tide while casting from the beach/rocks in front of a small lagoon that was emptying discoloured water and bait (mostly mullet) into the ocean. They were taken at about 10.30 or 11AM in the morning, along with three or four smaller barra.

We want to have many artficial small lagoons for Barramundi fishing on the shore in future.

On the other hand, in order to increase oysters on the rocky outcrops, we'll start planting many broadleaf trees on the land near the sea.

Otherwise, this environment of the land based barramundi fishing will be on the decline sooner than we have expected because of urban renewal and municipal waste.


Originally, all keen Barramundi anglers are something like a professor and a professional tournament fisherman in Barramundi fishing in Darwin. That's greatly wonderful culture of Darwin.

I think we need something important to do for the land based Barramundi fishing now.

I'd like to continue catching barramundi by land based in future too.
