Do you know what is good about Channel Island in fishing?

The heavy rains kept me from going fishing.
So I'm going to write about my favorite fishing location, Channel Island.
I normally ask my questions of nature with genuine curiosity and await her reply.
On the other hand, I'm usually in the pearling industry.
The experience that I gained in the pearling industry helps me greatly in my land based barramundi fishing.
Channel Island is a very good place for catching barramundi by land based among my usual fishing locations.
Surprisingly, my secret spot is a flat and uninspiring sandy-shallow water there.
What is good about Channel Island in fishing?
Normally, people would think of "not difficult for barramundi to find or obtain of appropriate baits".
I think that is correct.
This fishing location has a greater bait in quantity or amount as compared to other fishing locations.
What caused this difference in quantity of bait?

• Great tidal range
• Mangrove forests
• The iron contained in water from land 

I think that the iron content especially is in excellent condition.

This above picture may be proof that we can collect many fragments of iron ores on the land near the fishing location very easily at Channel Island.

An iron-built ship becomes a very good artificial fish reef, but an airplane does not become a very good artificial fish reef.
Because an airplane is made from duralumin.

A huge outbreak of phytoplankton has to have iron.
The living world is supported by the food chain.
Phytoplankton is very, very important for our barramundi fishing in food chain.
I know about the importance of phytoplankton due to my job.

The garpes are sour. I had no chance to catch a barramundi today.

I had no choice but to go to my usual fishing locations.
The grapes are sour.
To tell the truth, I wanted to go to the Shady Camp to fish.
As you know, I have no boat.
I don't have even a car.

It has rained in this wet season.
Much more rain has fallen than last year.
It will shower benefits upon us later.
But it is now in the very hard condition to fish in my usual fishing locations.
I'm steadfastly being patient about that.

I still fish the shore when it is rainy, but it is not the ideal time.

In my experience, the best time for catching many good-size saltwater barramundi from the shore in the rainy season is when we have had no rainy for 24 hours.

We had had no rain for 24 hours until that time.
The circumstances today were different to usual circumstances.
Normally, the sea water doesn't leave after an ebb tide around this area.
That means that a substantial amount of water has left in the ground.
It should be a fresh water.
Though even that, you know, is far from explaining all.
The freshwater will move upward when the tide flows because the freshwater is lighter than the saltwater.
This situation is not easy to keep on living for the marine small animals.
Their activities should be very low.
This situation is not easy to keep on living for those sea barramundi.

A barramundi can live in a blackish water too.
Separately from the normal life cycle of barramundi, some sea barramundi spend their life times, almost from their birth, in the sea.
Some barramundi travel back and force between both situations.

In addition, a sea barramundi doesn't like rubbish such as floating rubbish in the sea water.

The tides were not very bad for this fishing location today,
The sea wasn't very wavy.
But I had no chance to catch a barramundi in my usual fishing locations again.
The grapes are sour.

This year's first 24hours' lull in the rain. Barramundi #930-931 SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL YO-ZURI SS-MINNOW

I still fish the shore when it is rainy, but it is not the ideal time.
In my experience, the best time for catching many good-size saltwater barramundi from the shore in the rainy season is when we have had no rainy for 24 hours.
It showered off and on all days this year so far.
To be exact, the total time has been over 22 hours since the last rain in my fishing location.
Finally, that time came.
The sea wasn't very wavy but just wavy. 
This year's first chance.
I went to Mindil to fish after work by my 8years old 50cc scooter.
Anyhow, I loosened the drag pressure as much as possible.

• I have noticed that the shores of the sea, including the urban small creeks, were getting shallower in my fishing locations year by year.  Consequently, the flying distance of a lure must be increased. That was why I started using SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL.

• Many big schools of mullets were not seen after 2011.  As a result, I haven't used top-water lures. for examples LUCKY CRAFT SAMMY and GUNFISH very much since 2012.

• Right below the smalls rock and big rocks there were hollows, 5-10 baby barramundi, middle sized barramundi and nice sized barramundi were hiding there until 2012.  I called those rocks 'Barramundi house'.  My fishing locations don't have anything like a barramundi house now.  All it has is the common rock.

• There are more very wavy sea conditions in recent years than before.  Even if I go to an urban creek to fish, I will not catch any nice sized barramundi there because the water is very shallow.

Get Smart on Sewage

There were many schools of longtail tuna in front of Stokes Hill Wharf at the very beginning of the 1990's. 
I used to easily catch some longtail tuna on lure there.

The seawater was sometimes transparent like glass.
I could see many groups of nice-sized fish swimming in the water, whether I could catch them on lures or not.
I think that it was a very healthy sea.

Did you see any schools of longtail tuna from the jetty these days?
Also, I haven’t seen many schools of mullet swimming on the sea surface around the shores near Mindil Beach, Fannie Bay and East Point since 2011.

On the other hand, the seawater is still in some places maintained under a healthy condition in Darwin Harbour.

We might depend too much on the self-cleaning function caused by the large tidal movements around Darwin.

I received the following email from a reader of my blog:

“Hi Hiro,

I have been fishing Darwin Harbour for 20 years this year, the last seven have been spent land-based fishing mainly between Lee Point and Fanny Bay – similar to you.

“I have noticed too a marked drop-off in the numbers of fish in this area for the last 3-4 years for example 4-5 years ago it was not uncommon to go out and catch my bag limit of legal-sized barra.
“
It was not uncommon to tangle with meter+ ones either – not recently....

“For what it’s worth here is what I think is wrong. In a word – sewerage.

“The poorly treated sewage being released from East Point and Buffalo Creek is feeding toxic algal blooms which are driving away the fish – not killing them, just driving them away, which might explain why the barra fishing in the Harbour overall has been good the last few years.

“Last year the blooms were the worst I have seen. Consider this – in the last 3-4 years all the sewage that used to be pumped off Larrakeyah has been diverted to Ludmilla, which means all that s*** now ends up on our fishing flats.

“The new suburb of Lyons is adding additional load to an already overloaded Buffalo Creek system as well.

“I don’t remember beaches being shut before due to ecoli either.

“Let’s be clear – the algal blooms are natural events but the sewage acts like fertiliser making them much, much worse.

“The Government know about this but don’t want to spend the money to bring our system up to scratch, it’s 2015, and a capital city of Australia still has third-world water treatment facilities – it’s a bloody embarrassment.

“I think we need to make as much noise as possible and get the Government to fix this problem before things get any worse.”

The environment of the urban small creeks that surrounds changed?

Changes in the environment are affecting my regular fishing spots.
The monsoon basically pours benefits upon us for barramundi fishing.
On the other hand, it’s the very wavy-sea season.
It’s a very difficult time to catch a sea barramundi around Darwin.
There was a solution to that before 2013 in my fishing locations.
I could catch some nice-sized sea barramundi at an urban small creek location in the rainy season in those days.
As an example, the 78cm sea barramundi pictured was caught at an urban small creek.
However, I haven’t been catching many nice-sized sea barramundi there recently.
I can see more soil and sand accumulated on the shore of the sea and the urban small creek bed after having been carried there by wind or water.
There are more shallow waters than before there.
A large amount of monsoon rainwater washes a large amount of soil and sand away from the shore, but large amounts of soil and sand are also deposited on the shore again after the rainy season.
I have noticed that the shores of the sea, including the urban small creeks, were getting shallower in my fishing locations year by year.
Someone told me even sailfish used to be caught (land-based?) at East Point in the old days, but I am not sure if this is true.

私はその環境の変化に対応できないでいます。
基本的にモンスーンはバラマンディーフィッシングに恵みをもたらします。一方でその時期は波が荒い季節でもあるのです。海でバラマンディーを釣るのには厳しいものがあります。まあそうは言っても私の釣り場において２０１３年以前はやりようがありました。市街地の小さな海水の川や海水の池の入り口で良型のバラマンディーを雨季に釣っていたのです。例えば７８ｃｍのバラマンディーとか市街地の小さな海水の川で釣っていました。しかしこの頃は良型のバラマンディーをそこではとんと釣っていないのです。
そして予想を超えた大量の土砂が風や水によって運ばれて海岸や市街地の小さな海水の川底に堆積しているのを見かけます。そこでは以前より浅瀬が多くなっています。大量のモンスーンによる降雨は大量の土砂を海岸から洗い流しますが雨季が過ぎれば再び大量の土砂が海岸に堆積していきます。漸く気付いたのですが市街地の小さな海水の川を含む海岸は年々浅くなっているのです。
この話の信憑性は分かりませんが、昔はイーストポイントで（陸から？まさか）バショウカジキですら釣れたらしいですよ。

Certainly, we had considerable amount of rainfall which we had hoped for and a fishing probability should go on increasing, but it depends on some sea conditions in our wet season.

The tide:
Too fast or too slow water current should be avoided.
The best tide shifts with the best fishing.
The big tide has many chances to catch a sea barramundi but each chance has a very short fishing window.

The rainfall:

I still fish the shore when it is rainy, but it is not the ideal time.

In my experience, the best time for catching many good-size saltwater barramundi from the shore in the rainy season is when we have had no rainy for 24 hours.

The water quality:
It's easier to catch a sea barramundi in murky water than in clear water but in my experience, the sea barramundi won't take lures under the water condition of becoming murky because of the spawning of the coral.

The sea surface:
The sea barramundi comparatively won't take lures in a deadly calm water.
The sea barramundi comparatively will take lures in a slightly wavy water.
The sea barramundi comparatively won't take lures in a very wavy water.

My very good friend, Mr. Takahiro Nakamura caught two keeper-sized barramundi under the water condition of becoming slightly wavy with BOMBER LONG 14A Fire Tiger at the rocks on an urban shore when he stayed in Darwin before.
.
A fishing probability will increase rapidly when these above conditions are satisfied.

As a result, I couldn't catch any nice sized sea barramundi on Saturday and Sunday because these above conditions weren't satisfied..

I still went fishing all right, but I didn't catch any fish after all. Hiro's fishing in September

When used casually in my blog, this article can be considered to be corner-cutting.
I went fishing all right today.
But I didn't catch any fish as a result.

And with that, I have some pictures to show you.
This walk-through was named "Hiro's land based fishing tour".

This urban rock wall has many precarious footholds because of the difference in height: 7 meters between the upper and the lower.
I once tumbled off here.
I thought I was going to die at that time.

The knee pads and rock spike boots are essential for me here.

The elbow pads are essential for me also.

Whenever it's wet under foot I must move carefully.
Thus my weight was more than 95kg when I was the heaviest.
It was quite dangerous.
That's reason why I'm on a diet.

I couldn't catch any fish at that rock wall after all and so I went to an urban shallow water. next.
That means that "Look out!  There will be a crocodile coming."
That is not much of a problem here.

That is a nice place to see and walk also.

It looked very cool and shady.
"Not it."

I heard the sound of waves rushing ashore.
This was the passage to the sea.

The sea came into  sight.

I had to wade through the shallow water.
I confirmed that a crocodile was not here.

The incoming tide is quite dangerous here.
It means knowing when enough is enough.

As a result, I couldn't catch any fish today.

I posted these following articles before.


I was suddenly accosted by someone at the shop on the way there.
He said, "We will soon be catching more barramundi because the water temperature is rising now."
I only smiled at that time.
As many attentive readers of my fishing blog have already known, I didn't catch many fish in this coming season every year on our urban shallow waters.
The season, from the middle of August to the beginning of October, that the water temperature is rising should be the most difficult time to catch fish on our urban shallow waters to me.
That is more difficult than the winter season.
An unanticipated situation occurred in this winter.
Normally, I caught some nice sized barramundi even in the cold water.
I couldn't catch many barramundi in this winter even though we had a very good monsoon rainy season last time.
I would have never imagined that.

People generally believe that more barramundi will take lures in September because the water temperature is increasing.
Is it really the case?
In so far as my fishing location, it seems that barramundi won't take lures on our urban shallows while the water temperature is increasing even to compare with the winter season.
I should correct it into a more suitable expression.
Barramundi won't come to our urban shallows in that season.
Probably, the reason is why the absolute number of mullet is small on our urban shallows in that season.

We can't certainly expect more barramundi with a highly active condition under a low water temperature.
In addition, barramundi becomes more cautious against lures in a very clear water of the winter season.
However, barramundi must eat to live and so they will take lures on an empty stomach even in the cold water.
We can expect to catch more barramundi on our urban shallows in June and July rather than in September in that kind of meaning.
For some reason I couldn't catch a suitable number of barramundi in June and July this year.

So, what shall we do with it?
Very easy!
We don't need to push ourselves to catch barramundi on our urban shallows in these above season.

From my experience, it should be a very good season for catching Spanish mackerel in September around Darwin.

I accidentally recovered my lost lure from the sea this afternoon. The water temperature is rising but ???

The sea surface was slightly wavy which means very good for catching barramundi at the very good timing of incoming tide.
The water temperature wasn't very cold.
The water colour was murky on the shallow.
But I didn't catch any fish there.

When to fish a good sized sea barramundi by land based? Hiro's annual schedule table

I confine my remarks to my fishing fields.
I'll be lucky!
A chance hit is a hit after all.
I have seen a big barramundi on patrol on our shallows on the 1st of June.
But

• Good sized barramundis wouldn't bite lures at the sudden water-temperature change.

• The stable water temperature is ideal for our fishing.  

• Even under the condition of a very cold water, they start biting lures once the water temperature became stable again.

• September was the quietest time for catching good sized barramundi on our shallows. 
  We can't expect to catch sea-barramundis after around the middle of August by around the beginning of October.

• I couldn't catch many barramundis in September every year.

• March was told as Run-off in the wet land, but much quieter than April on the shore.

• May wasn't very bad, but quieter than June, July.  As the lowering speed of the actual seawater temperature is fast, we can't expect to catch good sized sea-barramundis by land based after the middle of May by around the middle of June.

• However, once the water temperature became stable, good sized barramundis became very active.

• Using "Minimum daytime temperature" is very important for our fishing study.

Good sized sea-barramundis won't take lures on our shallows as follows,

• The middle of May - the middle of June

• The middle of August - the beginning of October

Keep good heart!
If you had a boat, you could fish them.

• It's a very good season for catching a longtail tuna in May and June.

• It's a very good season for catching a Spanish mackerel in August and September.

It goes without saying that our land based fishing depends on the weather in the wet season.
The waves will be too rough to fish in many days of our wet season.
