The soft plastics are more likely to cause a snag in the case of the beginner.

I have been asked by a reader as follows.

All I'd get is snagged on the rocks. Weedless be the go?

"That is true," I will respond.

Many skilled lure-fishermen might tell him to wind the soft plastics as slow as possible.

One of them was me though.

That's why he lost his soft plastics at Mindil beach.

Mindil beach in some places is a rugged coast.

There are thousands of rocks covered with oysters in water.

Technically, Mindil is the toughest fishing location.

My winding speed of fishing line should be faster than he expected at Mindil.

In addition, I used a very fast fishing reel with 8.2 : 1 gear ratio in my video.

I should respond that he doesn't need the weedless even at Mindil.

And I can tell him this following approach.

First, he should wind the fishing line fast at the first cast of the soft plastic.

Second, he should wind the fishing line while gradually lowering winding speed with lifting the tip side while holding the fishing rod.

Finally, he will know the slowest winding speed for the fishing location at Mindil.

What water colour do you like for your barramundi fishing? Beginner's guide

Barramundi have to eat even in any water out of necessity.

Do I like these following waters for catching a barramundi on lure by land based on our shallows?

Blue water

Rippled and slightly wavy waters Yes

The first incoming tide is my favorite timing to catch a barramundi.

But the first incoming tide sometimes brings a very wavy water to our shallows.
The water is agitated with coarse-grained sand, mud and silt by very wavy water condition.
I don't like it.

I love the brown water without suspended matters.
Strictly speaking, this water is agitated with fine-grained mud and silt.
I need the coloring matter of mud and silt for the brown water.
There should be more chances to catch a nice sized barramundi in this water.

This very nice brown water is at Brett's secret point.
I like this water very much.

This very nice brown water is at the mouth of creek.

The strong water current doesn't produce the suspended matters with coarse-grained sand, mud and silt here on a fine day.  I borrowed Mark's lure in the above picture.
I caught a 102cm barramundi here.  (Hit lure was SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL.)

This is one of the best condition.

There is a very nice derived brown water from a clear water on shore.

I caught a 70cm barramundi here.

This brown water was very wavy.

Strictly speaking, the original water was comparatively clear at that time.
I caught a 85cm barramundi just after changing the water condition.
That's why the water hadn't been agitated with coarse-grained sand, mud and silt yet at that time.

I like a brown water for my land based barramundi fishing very much.
I tried to find it at the place that I was unaccustomed to.
I became trapped in the knee deep sinking mud on the banks of the channel and had to walk five meters there.
I was really worn out.
It's a really dangerous situation.

The best way to catch sea barramundis as many as you can possible on the shallow water? by Hiro Nakamura

Conditions: Regardless of the barramundi's size

The average sizes of the sea barramundis that I caught on our shallows are 45cm - 50cm.
I think that these sizes are bigger than the average sizes of Black Bass fishing.
It's a very good size enough to enjoy the game fishing.
I sometimes catch 70cm and larger sea barramundis on our urban shallows.
I love and respect Black Bass fishing very much.
I learned a lot of things there.
Therefore, I've been obsessed with fishing Barramundi ever since I caught a wild one the first time I tried it.

Hard body lures or Soft plastic bait lure?

I think that the soft plastic bait lures can fish much more sea barramundis than the hard body lures on our shallows.

If you know the sea barramundi's favorite action of the soft plastic bait lures on the shallow water, you will catch many sea barramundis on our urban shallows.

A sea barramundi often takes a soft plastic bait lure at an above situation.
They love it very, very much.

That's why you should retrieve your soft plastic bait lure with 'Stop and Go' with courage.
Please use this theory at your own risk.  (*^^*)

In addition, you can catch the most number of the sea barramundis regardless of the size with a thin fishing rod and 65mm - 80mm sized soft plastic bait lures.

The method to catch a fish with a thin fishing rod and a small lure are suggested as a 'Noodling' by  Mr. Glenn Hubble popularly known as Harbour Master and Mr. Dave Krantz before.

To tell the truth, 'Noodling' is the best way to catch the sea barrramundis as many as you can possible regardless of the size on our shallows.
"Noodling' itself can make an ideal action of the soft plastic bait lure in the water without your skill.
That means that a 'Noodling' itself can make a natural 'Stop and Go' in action.

I used to use a 'Noodling' for catching a sea barramundi as a main gear on our shallows.

• Reel: SHIMANO SUSTAIN 1000FG

• Rod: ST.CROIX AVID / AVS66LF2 (6'6" Light power, Fast action, 4-8LB, 1/16-1/4OZ) 

         Very high-performance thin rod (Much thiner than the other rods)

• Lure: SQUIDGY FISH

As a result, I could catch more than 370 sea barramundis (656 fishes including the other fishes in total) a year.

However, I don't use it now.
I'm 53 years old now.
I don't need many fishes any more.
To use a 'Noodling' is the best way to let a sea barramundi take a small soft plastic bait lure.
But it's not the best way to land a sea barramundi for beginners.
I mean that I need a skill for landing a nice sized sea barramundi with 'Noodling'.
If you were a very experienced and skilled angler, 'Noodling' should be the best way for catching a barramundi.


It's very, very important things to catch a sea barramundi on the shallow water as follows,

• A 'Hard body lure' will give you more fun and  impressions when you catch a sea barramundi on the shallow water.

•  A 'Hard body lure' will be taken by more metery barramundis?? Or Mongrel??

What lures must you buy? If you're an extreme beginner. The minimum number of lures necessary for catching a nice barramundi.

You don't have to buy new fishing rod and reel for catching a nice sized barramundi.
Your old 6' fishing rod and reel should be good for when you first start out.
Once you get some experience you'll want to buy good fishing rod and reel for salt water use-you will feel that good rod and reel are much easier.
Ask at your local tackle store for the best advice.
Also, it is nice to own many different lures.
But to start out you only need a few.

Please buy YO-ZURI SS MINNOW and SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL.

YO-ZURI SS MINNOW has 65mm and 90mm in size.
Please buy a 90mm one because it's easier to cast because you're an extreme beginner.
(I like a 65mm very much.)
Please buy an above green in colour if possible.
(I use many colours because I'm an experienced angler.)
This lure is the most difficult minnow to strike a snag on shallow water.
You just need a steady retrieving.

SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL has 90mm and 115mm in size.
Please buy a 90mm one because you are an extreme beginner.
Please buy an above AUSSIE HERRING in colour if possible.
(I use many colours because I'm not a beginner.)
You need a steady retrieving or a 'stop and go'.

It becomes very easy by practice.

Please find a shallow water with oyster-rocks like an above picture.

• YO-ZURI SS MINNOW for 30cm - 50cm deep water

• SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL 50cm - 70cm deep water

You don't need to try any deeper waters.

You'll become a experienced angler soon.
And then you'll buy good fishing rod and reel for salt-water use.
GLoomis, ST. CROIX and STELLA should be very nice!
You will feel that good rod and reel are much easier.

However, you'll still keep using YO-ZURI SS MINNOW and SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL.

Please use my Scooter Man's Knot (The Slim Straight Knot).

The land based barramundi fishing has many difficult situations as follows,

1. Very slippery rock-walks
2. Quick incoming tide
3. Wading through the shallows

• Strong water current
• Muddy bottom
• Crocodile
• Shark
• Stingray
• Stone fish
• Box jelly fish
• Oyster-rocks under the water

The fish window is very small and short by land based.
It's only 15-30 minutes.
You can catch 1 or 2 barramundi at the point.
You must tie the knot as soon as possible.

That's why we need to create a very easy, strong and reliable knot for tying braid line and leader line.
It takes within 2 minutes to tie the Slim Straight Knot (The Scooter Man's Knot) on the shore.
(For reference: The Slim Beauty Knot, The Kaneit Knot and The SHIMANO TV's Knot)

First of all, it is thought that the Slim Straight Knot has already had a good enough strength for hooking and landing a metery barramundi if it's properly made.
(Double braid-lines should be much stronger than single one.)
My greatest concern for the improvement was how to keep these following smaller knots and less loops comparing with The Slim Beauty Knot, The Kaneit Knot and The SHIMANO TV's Knot.

Form a loop and a double overhand knot with the leader line.

Form a double overhand knot with the braid line on the leader line.
And then pull up and tighten the both lines.

Double back parallel to the standing line.
Make a loop by laying tag end over the double line.

Make 8 turns with the tag end around the double line and through the loop.
Must tighten this part as firm as possible until the braid line shows a different colour.
This is the most important procedure.  Use the plier!
If you are not good at tightening this part, the leader line will fell out of the knot easily.

And then pull up each so that the two knots lock up on one another.
Check the loose knots and fasten them tight with the plier.
Finally, trim the knot.

 

The Slim Straight Knot can make a narrow angled finish.

This narrow angled finish will avoid serious damages of the line guide rings on the fishing rod.
Need some practice to make a narrow angled finish.
An ideal knot for casting lures must be slim and straight!

Please check the knot every 30 minutes.
