You don't have to buy new fishing rod and reel for catching a nice sized barramundi.
Your old 6' fishing rod and reel should be good for when you first start out.
Once you get some experience you'll want to buy good fishing rod and reel for salt water use-you will feel that good rod and reel are much easier.
Ask at your local tackle store for the best advice.
Also, it is nice to own many different lures.
But to start out you only need a few.
Please buy YO-ZURI SS MINNOW and SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL.
YO-ZURI SS MINNOW has 65mm and 90mm in size.
Please buy a 90mm one because it's easier to cast because you're an extreme beginner.
(I like a 65mm very much.)
Please buy an above green in colour if possible.
(I use many colours because I'm an experienced angler.)
This lure is the most difficult minnow to strike a snag on shallow water.
You just need a steady retrieving.
SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL has 90mm and 115mm in size.
Please buy a 90mm one because you are an extreme beginner.
Please buy an above AUSSIE HERRING in colour if possible.
(I use many colours because I'm not a beginner.)
You need a steady retrieving or a 'stop and go'.
It becomes very easy by practice.
Please find a shallow water with oyster-rocks like an above picture.
- YO-ZURI SS MINNOW for 30cm - 50cm deep water
- SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL 50cm - 70cm deep water
You don't need to try any deeper waters.

And then you'll buy good fishing rod and reel for salt-water use.
GLoomis, ST. CROIX and STELLA should be very nice!
You will feel that good rod and reel are much easier.
However, you'll still keep using YO-ZURI SS MINNOW and SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL.

The land based barramundi fishing has many difficult situations as follows,

- Very slippery rock-walks
- Quick incoming tide
- Wading through the shallows
- Strong water current
- Muddy bottom
- Crocodile
- Shark
- Stingray
- Stone fish
- Box jelly fish
- Oyster-rocks under the water
The fish window is very small and short by land based.
It's only 15-30 minutes.
You can catch 1 or 2 barramundi at the point.
You must tie the knot as soon as possible.
That's why we need to create a very easy, strong and reliable knot for tying braid line and leader line.
It takes within 2 minutes to tie the Slim Straight Knot (The Scooter Man's Knot) on the shore.

First of all, it is thought that the Slim Straight Knot has already had a good enough strength for hooking and landing a metery barramundi if it's properly made.
(Double braid-lines should be much stronger than single one.)
My greatest concern for the improvement was how to keep these following smaller knots and less loops comparing with The Slim Beauty Knot, The Kaneit Knot and The SHIMANO TV's Knot.
Form a loop and a double overhand knot with the leader line.
Form a double overhand knot with the braid line on the leader line.
And then pull up and tighten the both lines.
Double back parallel to the standing line.
Make a loop by laying tag end over the double line.
Make 8 turns with the tag end around the double line and through the loop.
Must tighten this part as firm as possible until the braid line shows a different colour.
This is the most important procedure. Use the plier!
If you are not good at tightening this part, the leader line will fell out of the knot easily.
And then pull up each so that the two knots lock up on one another.
Check the loose knots and fasten them tight with the plier.
Finally, trim the knot.
The Slim Straight Knot can make a narrow angled finish.
This narrow angled finish will avoid serious damages of the line guide rings on the fishing rod.
Need some practice to make a narrow angled finish.
An ideal knot for casting lures must be slim and straight!
Please check the knot every 30 minutes.
