Attaching an w-hook as an assist hook to the tail of Zerek Live Shrimp, I could obtain a good fishing result even from cautious barramundi.
Zrek Live Shrimp
Barramundi # 1056-1058

We had a very good rainy season.
Continual heavy rain mainly between the end of December and the beginning of March partly washed away sand and mud that have settled at bottom of the small creeks and shoaly waters.

The small creeks and shoaly waters became shallower in recent years because of the poor rainy seasons.
Many rocks that fish were using as a refuge were buried in the sand on the bottom during that time.

Now it increased about a 15cm water depth at least.
That should be welcomed.
So small barramundi are increasing in my usual fishing locations.
They are easily caught on lures when the productive fishing window is opened.

Wednesday, I went fishing to Midil creek.
There's no moon.
The tide was 7.20m at that moment.
The tide water was going out.
The water was very clear.

This revolutionary idea and lure were given by Mr. Mark Jagla.
Anyone can verify the effectiveness of this improvement.

70cm and 62cm Barramundi #1033 and #1034
Maria MJ-1 SF110
Squidgy Pro Mongrel

It's natural that there are some places having high cost effectiveness for the sponsors of Million Dollar Fish.
I heard that some barramundi with a red tag were released from the boat lamp at Channel Island too.
So I went to Channel Island to fish and sought out that chance.

The tides on October 8
03:35am--3.15m
09:10am--5.64m
16:13pm--2.31m
22:32pm--5.89m

The tides on October 9
04:25am--3.56m
09:39am--5.16m
17:03pm--2.72m
23:27pm--5.55m

I caught 70cm and 62cm barramundi on October 8 but didn't catch any fish on October 9 at Channel Island.

The best tide shifts with the best fishing point every hour.
There was a widespread milky water there on October 8.
There was a stretch of seawater without current or movement on October 9.
In addition, the current caused by tides was very slow.
The seawater was clear.

70cm Barramundi was caught on a Maria MJ-1 SF110.

闇夜でもルアーでバラマンディーは釣れる!

Friday night, February 12, 2016.
Tide: 20:59pm--7.76m
The big tide carried many fish into the saltwater culvert at the high tide, and what was better,
there wasn't any big rains for the last few days.
The monsoon rains are essential to us though.

There was no moon while I was fishing.
I think, someone is worried that it is too dark for barramundi to take a lure.
Barramundi can take a lure in a very dark water much more than you think.
I won't use any lures with fluorescent coating material for the barramundi fishing.

The productive fishing window normally opens while the water is flowing in the saltwater culvert.
I cast my lures around shallow snags and caught 51cm and 50cm barramundi from the bank of the saltwater culvert.
These are my 1001st and 1002nd barramundi.
I released them into the water.

These lures are dark in colour.
However, barramundi took them positively in a very dark water.

My 999th barramundi
Maria MJ-1 S110F
I hope Darwin harbor should be stocked with more larval fish every year.

January 23, 2016
I went to Channel Island to fish.
The tide was going out.
Today's tides were big, therefore, the speed of the sea water movement was fast.
The sea water went down very quickly.
I couldn't stay for long at the same fishing point which means the productive fishing window was short.
You may call it a short productive fishing window, but you cannot call it a bad productive fishing window.
The reason is because you may catch many barramundi in a short time, in a short productive fishing window.
I caught and released my 999th barramundi on lure by land based there.
I officially caught and released my 1st barramundi on lure by land based on March 30, 2010 because I started keeping a record in a blog of my fishing history from March 30, 2010.

The fishing result
78 barramundi in 2010 (50years old)
273 barramundi in 2011 (51years old)
375 barramundi in 2012 (52years old)
112 barramundi in 2013 (53years old)
83 barramundi in 2014 (54years old)
74 barramundi in 2015 (55years old)
4 barramundi in 2016 so far
Total: 999 barramundi

I tried to find the fishing-method utilizing habit thereof and tidal movement in 2010.
My job means that I often learn pearl-oysters.
Both of them are marine animals.
I was able to learn a lot of things from my job for my land based barramundi fishing.
The greater part of my land based barramundi fishing - learning is useful in my pearl-life too, nor 'vice versa'.

Live mullet are a favorite bait for barramundi.
It was very easy to find big schools of mullet in 2011 and 2012 in my usual fishing locations.
Thereafter it is almost impossible to find big schools of mullet in my usual fishing locations.
My fishing result is relative to the inflow of mullet into my fishing locations.
On the other hand, it is very important for an aquaculture people (Government) to release many young barramundi into Darwin harbor which means Darwin harbor should be stocked with larval fish every year.

The 990th barramundi
57cm Barramundi #990
Maria MJ-1 S110F

Today's tides were big.
The water current was strongly fast and moved at high speed.
I couldn't stay through a long period of time at the same fishing point.
That means that the productive fishing window was short.
Barramundi wouldn't take lures positively under the condition like this.
I know that they can't take lures very well in the strong water current.
By watching the shape of the tail-fin, they should be inferior to Queen-fish in swiftness.
I had to match my lure-action with their timing.
I chose a Maria MJ-1 S110F.
Maria MJ-1 S110F is a very effective lure for the land based barramundi fishing on our shallows.
MJ-1 has a long flight distance and was able to fly easily, even against the wind.
In addition,  MJ-1 swims in the strong water current very well.
MJ-1 was the perfect lure for that condition.
The sea water was clear - murky.
The sea surface was rippled.
That's reason why I chose chrome in colour.
After all, I had a bit of good luck.
As a result, I caught a 57cm urban saltwater barramundi.

Barramundi #985-988
Ideal tide and Long productive fishing window
ZEREK Live cherabin
MARIA MJ-1

Saturday
00:38am 5.94m
07:46am 3.02m
13:40pm 5.16m
19:41pm 3.13m

It's an ideal tide for catching a saltwater barramundi on our shallows.
The neap tide has a slow-moving water flow which means you can stay at the same fishing point for longer than usual.
That's means that you have more chances to catch a barramundi there because you have time to spare.
Even if the tide is ideal, it will be very difficult to catch a barramundi when the sea is very calm like a mirror or very wavy on shallows.

I went to Mindil beach to fish around 9:00am on Saturday.
The sea was slightly wavy which means very good for catching a barramundi on shallows.
There were thousands rocks under the water.
First, I used a ZEREK Live cherabin.
A slow, straight retrieve is all it takes but an occasional twitch will further enhance its liveliness.
Soon, I caught a 48cm barramundi.

Then I caught a small barramundi #986 on ZEREK Live cherabin again.

Third, I used a Maria MJ-1 S110F and then I caught a 49cm barramundi.

After all, I caught four barramundi at the same point.

Thanks to the long productive fishing window and slightly wavy sea condition, I enjoyed the land based barramundi fishing very much on Saturday morning.

Barramundi in a city area

Mindil Beach is in a city area.
I went fishing there after work.
Today's tides were very big.
That means that the productive fishing windows are short.
The water current was strongly fast.
I felt like my lures was heavy.
That's not good.
The sea surface was slightly wavy.
That's good.
It should be full moon tonight.
That's not good.
Basically, I don't need the moon light while I am fishing.
I had to fish before full moon came up.

In one sense or another, I have the emotion of being frightened while I was standing knee-deep in the water in Darwin.
Mindil Beach is no exception to this rule.
  • Box jelly fish
  • Stingray
  • Stone fish
  • Shark
  • Crocodile

There were many rocks under the water.
Maria MJ-1 S110F was very efficient under the condition like that.
As a result, I caught a 52cm urban saltwater barramundi.

Saturday barramundi #980-981
Maria MJ-1 S110F
Squidgy Pro Mongrel

Saturday, I left home at 10am.
It took 60minutes from my place to this fishing location by my 150cc scooter.
Today's lowest tide was very low.
The water current was fast.
I don't recommend this tide for catching a nice sized barramundi by land based on shore very much.
I didn't mind that.
I didn't expect to catch a nice one today.
I waded through the shallow water and was tired to walk on the soft sands.
I arrived at that fishing location at last.

A boat already was there.
Two people were casting lures on the boat.
They were dropping anchor at the strike zone where I normally had many barramundi's strikings.

Of course, my lure flew for that boat.
My lure fell short.
They didn't catch any fish.
But I caught two small barramundi there.

If I have a boat, I will fish at the mouth of small creeks at the incoming tide.
The land based fishermen are too dangerous to stay there more than 30minutes.
Many nice sized barramundi will come into the creek.

74cm barramundi #979
Maria MJ-1 S110F

I left my place a little past 7:30am on last Saturday.
I went to a petrol station nearby my place first.
I had my 150cc scooter filled up at the petrol station.
It took 60minutes from my place to that fishing location by my scooter.

The tides were good.
I expected that there would be frequent fish's strikes on my lures.
I wasn't counting on that.
I had hundreds of the twitching actions on my lures with fatiguing my left arm.
I'm 55 years old now.
I needed frequent breaks.
Using a small popper, I was relaxing my left arm.
A 64cm barramundi suddenly took a Halco Rooster popper 60mm into the water.
The fishing line was forcibly pulled by this 64cm fish many times at short intervals.
So suddenly that  I could not help checking the hooking, but in another moment I recovered myself, feeling sure that it must be a real barramundi fishing.
I enjoyed his forcibly pulling fishing line very much.

The water current became slow.
A 74cm barramundi suddenly jumped.
A very heavy barramundi took my MJ-1.
He jumped again.
Mj-1 was very effective for catching a barramundi in the shallow water  on shore.
