Productive Fishing Window

I hit my little toe against the door frame and my nail was taken off last Thursday.
I am passive in fishing from that day.
I felt that in that case I really ought to answer a question from many readers.
A frequently asked question is "Where is the best fishing spot on weekend?" or "When is the best tide for fishing barramundi on weekend?".
Please use a lot of information and think by yourself.
Although I am acting big, in reality I myself won't know that until right before.
But I know more than just the name of barramundi due to my job.
I keep bringing up the same theory over and over again.
"The best tide shifts with the best fishing point every hour."
Basically, you can fish sea-barramundi in the case of the tide while moving.
Exceptionally, injured barramundi will take lures even in the tide while not moving.
They are frantic to live today.
Statistically speaking, there are some good timings in which an angler is likely to be catching sea-barramundi in the shallow water.

"Productive Fishing Window" is important.
It depends on the fishing point.
The allowed time of the productive fishing window varies according to the fishing point.
It in some places is less than 30 minutes when the tide is coming.
Furthermore, the other conditions influence the results of the land based sea-barramundi fishing in shallow water.
The good fishing results are usually not expected under the following conditions.
  • Very windy
  • Very wavy
  • Very flat sea surface
  • Sudden change of water temperature
  • Too much freshwater
Please don't forget that barramundi are moving about in search of their baits.
In addition, they are very cautious against you.

Squidgies Fish
Very big tide

A small tide has a very long productive fishing window.
A big tide has some short productive fishing windows.
You should go fishing to a fishing location with a productive fishing window at a proper time if you wish to catch a fish on lure.
In any case, whether you catch a fish or not depends on the state of the wind.

Today's tides were very big.
01:23am---0.60m
07:34am---7.95m
13:14pm---1.39m
19:25pm---7.74m

A good fisherman moves around to be in search of a short productive fishing window in his usual fishing locations at a very big tide.

I made a plan for fishing today.
First, I fish in an outgoing tide at Channel Island.
Second, I fish in an incoming tide at East Point.
Third, I fish at a high water at Mindil Beach.

I went to Channel Island to fish in an outgoing tide.
The state of the wind was ideal.
Barramundi won't take lures in a windless state in very shallows.
Barramundi won't take lures in a very noisy sound of wind.

They have just come back from their seasonal jelly-prawn trip.
A few jelly prawns appeared in the shallow water on mud flat.
I used a Squidgies Fish 70mm/Mint jelly with a 1/6oz jighead.
I reeled the fishing line slowly without any actions.

As a result, I caught 51cm and 50cm barramundi in a short productive fishing window at Channel Island.

A big tide also has a short productive fishing window at a high water.
Furthermore, a dark night should be a pretty favorable situation.

I caught a barramundi on a Squidgy Pro Mongrel at the mouth of a small creek there.

My 999th barramundi
Maria MJ-1 S110F
I hope Darwin harbor should be stocked with more larval fish every year.

January 23, 2016
I went to Channel Island to fish.
The tide was going out.
Today's tides were big, therefore, the speed of the sea water movement was fast.
The sea water went down very quickly.
I couldn't stay for long at the same fishing point which means the productive fishing window was short.
You may call it a short productive fishing window, but you cannot call it a bad productive fishing window.
The reason is because you may catch many barramundi in a short time, in a short productive fishing window.
I caught and released my 999th barramundi on lure by land based there.
I officially caught and released my 1st barramundi on lure by land based on March 30, 2010 because I started keeping a record in a blog of my fishing history from March 30, 2010.

The fishing result
78 barramundi in 2010 (50years old)
273 barramundi in 2011 (51years old)
375 barramundi in 2012 (52years old)
112 barramundi in 2013 (53years old)
83 barramundi in 2014 (54years old)
74 barramundi in 2015 (55years old)
4 barramundi in 2016 so far
Total: 999 barramundi

I tried to find the fishing-method utilizing habit thereof and tidal movement in 2010.
My job means that I often learn pearl-oysters.
Both of them are marine animals.
I was able to learn a lot of things from my job for my land based barramundi fishing.
The greater part of my land based barramundi fishing - learning is useful in my pearl-life too, nor 'vice versa'.

Live mullet are a favorite bait for barramundi.
It was very easy to find big schools of mullet in 2011 and 2012 in my usual fishing locations.
Thereafter it is almost impossible to find big schools of mullet in my usual fishing locations.
My fishing result is relative to the inflow of mullet into my fishing locations.
On the other hand, it is very important for an aquaculture people (Government) to release many young barramundi into Darwin harbor which means Darwin harbor should be stocked with larval fish every year.

Productive fishing window for the land base?

The productive fishing windows are narrow at the big tides.
The currents caused by tides also become greater.
The sea water goes out, and comes in, more rapidly than during a neap tide.
The sea changes quickly from one state or condition to another in my fishing locations.
That means that the greater tide is, the narrower productive fishing windows become.
We cannot stay for a long time in one fishing point.
The best tide shifts with the best fishing point every hour.
We always need to think where barramundi are coming to.

Even in such a situation though, the productive fishing window around the high tide becomes comparatively wide.
That's why I usually go fishing to the mouth of a small creek around the high tide during a big tide.
The dark period from 7:30pm to 10:00pm is preferable for catching a saltwater barramundi by land based.

The morning time will sometimes do.
That depends on each fishing location though.

Catching bait fish is hard to a barramundi during a big tide because of the strong water current.
So barramundi sometimes miss the target lure while the water current is moving fast.
This adds to the short strikings to lures by barramundi.
I have a method for coping with this short striking.
The drag force for fishing reel should be loosen.
Please use it at your own risk.

On the other hand, the productive fishing windows are wide at the middle - small tides.
The sea water is moving slowly.
We can stay for a long time in one fishing point.
Barramundi will take lures with a good eye for observation, at any rate, they should be shortsighted though.
They don't miss the target lure very much during a small tide.
Practically speaking, I prefer small-middle tides to big tides for the land based fishing.

We will not catch a nice sized barramundi under the following conditions, however good the tides are.
  • Very wavy sea
  • Very calm sea like a mirror
  • Very noisy wind
  • Very bright moon light
  • Just after big rain
So far I have been catching 983 barramundi on lure by land based since 2010.
