Barramundi #1127-1129
Zerek Live Shad 90mm
Dry season has just started.

Anzac day.
It was a pleasant morning.
Wet season has gone.
Dry season has just started.
I went fishing at East Point in the early morning.
The tide water was coming into the shallow.
The sea water was very clear.
Five or six people had already been there.
Some of them were fishing on live baits.
I saw one of them caught a nice sized barramundi.
I caught and released a flathead on a hard body lure.
But I couldn't catch any barramundi.
The lure motions were discerned by barramundi.

And I went straight to Mindil Beach.
I saw some people fishing at my usual fishing point in the clear-water side.
So I had to fish at the murky-water side.
I waded through the shallow water to a knee deep point with great attention to crocodiles, stingrays and stonefish.

It would be very effective for matching the lure colour with the water colour in a shallow water.
By this, the lure motion hard to be not discerned by the fish.
The land based barramundi fishing differs the boat based barramundi fishing in many ways.
As a result, I caught and released 3 barramundi this morning.
To tell the truth, I am unsatisfied with the size of average barramundi around Mindil Beach.
Mindil Beach is located near the urban district very much.
We have no choice.

Barramundi #1126
Shallow diving lure

I went fishing at Mindil beach on Saturday.
The sea water was very clear.
A 4.7m crocodile has been pulled from Darwin Harbour by rangers on the previous day.
It happened only yesterday, I waded through the shallow water to a knee deep point with caution.
I tested some trial products of the shallow-diving lures.
One of those was a very nice shallow-diving lure having a very hard and wide wobbling action.
Barramundi were not very hungry because they were eating many jelly prawns.
However, its very hard and wide wobbling action sufficiently attracted barramundi's interest.
As a result, I caught and released a barramundi on that shallow diving lure.

There have been very excellent shallow diving lures in the past.

  • Yo-Zuri SS minnow 70F/90F
  • Surecatch Snap Bean 65F
The harder the wobbling action is, the more it attracts barramundi's interest.
My land based barramundi fishing had to have these shallow diving lures.
On the other hand, such lures had low demand in boat fishing.
Finally, these shallow diving lures were discontinued.

I know from experience that a green shallow-diving lure attracts more barramundi's interests in colour.

Barramundi #1125 by Hiro
59cm Barramundi by Mr. Matt Cook
Zerek Live Cherabin

The boiling of mullets is not often seen nowadays in my usual fishing locations.
After 2010, I haven't seen any large boiling of mullets.
Therefore, the number of chances to use a topwater-lure has decreased.

On both days of April 14 Saturday, April 15 Sunday, tides were very good for the land based barramundi fishing and I went fishing at Channel Island and East Point.
There were many jelly-prawns about 1 cm in body length and mullets about 13 cm in body length in the shallow waters.
I saw a big barramundi about 1 m in body length was swimming along near the mangrove roots.
I cast various kinds of lures at Channel Island and East Point on Saturday.
But barramundi wouldn't take my lures at all.
I went fishing at Channel Island on Sunday again.
Then my good fishing friend, Mr. Matt Cook (Cookie) came, so he caught Fingermark, 2 barramundi and Grunter.
I couldn't catch any barramundi at Channel Island like today just like I did yesterday.
It seemed that they were not that hungry.
Cookie just used Zerek Live Cherabin 100mm / green colour.
His method was a simple retrieve without the lure hopping up and down.
As a result, he caught a 59cm barramundi.

The tide was stopping.
Then I went straight to East Point.
I followed Cookie's method at East Point when the tide was water coming into the channel.
As a result, I caught and released a 45cm barramundi on the same lure as Cookie.

We have large outbreaks of jelly-prawns many times in a year in NT.
Barramundi and mangrove-jack are moving about in search of large outbreaks of jelly-prawns now.
There are inequalities in level of the fishing results even within a harbour with that.

By the way, I was bitten by bush flies when I was fishing at Channel Island.
They eject something which affect you like swollen, hardness and redness.
I have painful and itchy feeling for several days.

Mindil beach
Barramundi #1123-1124
Bells Aladdjn P3 90F
Zerek Flat Shad 90mm

I went fishing at Mindil beach.
It was the first clear seawater in a while on Saturday morning.
We cannot expect much for a big sized barramundi at Mindil beach because it is a beach close to the centre of a city.
For all that, it is very fun to fish on lures at Mindil beach.
My recommendation is a lure fishing like a sight fishing.
Needless to say, a sight fishing is very fun particularly at a time of clear seawater.
You can easily enjoy an unique atmosphere of the sight-fishing like.
However, if you get carried away you will risk failure so take care!
There are thousands of rocks covered with oysters in the very shallow water.
If you are a beginner who is to lure fishing, normal soft plastics are likely to cause a snag.
Even a floating-hard-body lure sometime causes a snag there.
The chances will depend on your ability and experience in lure fishing.
Conversely, you are able to develop your skill as a lure-fishing angler at Mindil beach.
Although I am acting big, in reality I am just talking big.

First, L caught a small barramundi on a hard body lure.

In the meantime, the sea was getting up.

52cm Barramundi

My second barramundi was bigger than the first.
I used a soft plastic shad with a weedless hook.

Barramundi #1120-1122
Mangrovejack #52
Easter holidays

Were you able to enjoy the fishing during the Easter holidays?
Seems like you're in good mood at Shady camp!
I'm jealous of that.
As for my land based barramundi fishing, it is not at my best because there is still a lot of fresh water in the shallows on shore.
My results as follows,
  • March 30, Friday: 2 small barramundi at Channel Island
  • March 31, Saturday: 0, but my friend, Cookie, caught 1 barramundi at Channel Island
  • April 1, Sunday: 1 small barramundi and missed 1 big barramundi at Channel Island
  • April 2, Monday: 1 small mangrovejack at a saltwater lake near my place

March 30, Friday

March 30, Friday

March 31, Saturday  My good fishing friend, Cookie caught and released a barramundi.

April 1, Sunday

April 2, Monday

The event that left impressions on me are as follows,
March 31: My good fishing friend, Matt Cook (Cookie), caught a barramundi on Zerek Live Cherabin 100mm/green colour at Channel Island.  He normally catch more barramundi than I do at Channel Island.

April 1: I missed a 95-105cm barramundi on Squidgy Pro Mongrel 90mm/Drop-bear colour at Channel Island.  I adjusted the drag setting for my Shimano Stella 2500FE carefully.  Despite that, a monster broke the 40lb leader line, and got away.  I saw a big girl jump twice.

April 2: A quick fishing before breakfast is refreshing in the holiday morning.  I went fishing at a saltwater lake.  That saltwater lake is 5 minutes by scooter away from my place.  I caught and released a mangrovejack on Squidgies Fish 80mm/Drop-bear colour.  That's why I like to live in Darwin.
