Difficult to hook barramundi firmly on a fishhook when the salt concentration is low in the sea water.

This rainy season is going good so far.
Today was clear for the first time in a long time.
I went to Channel Island to fish.
One glance was enough for me to see through the condition of the fresh water entering sea water from the land so much.
Thousands of fallen leaves were floating on the sea surface on the very shallow-water side.
Under these circumstances, barramundi won't take lures.
I waded about 20m way in toward the deep water while being careful not to accidentally step on a stingray.
I found many small prawns there.
This sign bodes well for our barramundi fishing.
The continuous large rainfalls benefit upon in my usual fishing locations.

Luckily, I hooked a nice sized barramundi on a Gold-Bomber 15Long A but couldn't land that fish.
I sometimes think that it's difficult to hook barramundi firmly on a fishhook when the salt concentration is low in the sea water.
In addition, I get many short strikes on my soft plastic baits when the salt concentration is low in the sea water.
These cases may be related to the osmotic pressure of the body fluid of a barramundi.
That couldn't be true, though.

Barramundi won't take in more fresh water into the body than it needs.
On the contrary, barramundi takes in large quantities of salt water into the body by mouth.
That's just how they keep the osmotic pressure of the body fluid stable.
That's reason why some sea-barramundi inhabiting in the deeper-water side with a high salt concentration that follow schools of small fishes or prawns into the shallow water with a low salt concentration will get bewildered in unfamiliar environments in the rainy season.

I went to East Point that afternoon.
My very good fishing friend, Mr. Roderic Pineda was catching bait fish by netting.
He showed me many prawns, mullets and whitings.

Again, this rainy season is going good so far.

Bigger lures catch bigger barramundi?

The answer is yes!
If you want to catch a big barramundi, you have to use a big lure.
Even if you had the good fortune to hook a big barramundi on a small lure, you wouldn't be able to land the big barramundi in all probability.
Of course, a small lure can catch a big barramundi.
But it is sheer luck.
I know from my experience and my friends' experiences that a big barramundi prefers to take big lures.
That indicates the results so far.
I seldom use big lures in my usual fishing locations.
I have caught 1048 barramundi so far.
However, I have caught only 3 of over 80cm barramundi in my usual fishing locations so far.
In the case of my good fishing friend, Mr. Stephen Lew, he has caught an over 80cm barramundi every 6 barramundi in my usual fishing locations.
What's different about my fishing and his fishing.
The difference is only in the lure's size.
However, as a matter of course, his fishing asks a lot of patience and skill.

If I have used a Squidgies Fish 70mm as my main lure in my usual fishing locations after a large-rainfall-wet season, I would catch 200 - 365 barramundis in one year.
Those barramundis would be 30cm - 70cm in size.
The average would be 40cm - 50cm in size.

Squidgies Fish 70mm / Black Gold

If I have used a Squidgy Pro Mongrel 90mm as my main lure in my usual fishing locations after a large-rainfall-wet season, I would catch 70 -140 barramundis in one year.
Those barramundis would be 45cm - 80cm in size.
The average would be 50cm - 65cm in size.

Squidgy Pro Mongrel 90mm / Rainbow Fish

By the way, I caught a 102cm barramundi on a Squidgy Pro Mongrel 90mm / Drop Bear.
Helifish took me to a barramundi heaven.

Where to fish by the tide?
That they may understand this theory, I'll reveal my own secret.

It's still raining a bit of over my usual fishing locations.
Today's afternoon and evening were very wavy as usual in our rainy season.
I found it difficult to find the good productive fishing windows under the circumstances.
Today's tides were very good for my land based barramundi fishing.
Frequently asked questions are found in my website.
They don't know which tide is the best for their fishing.
I will answer that.
I also don't know which tide is best for their fishing because I don't know about their usual fishing locations.
The best tide shifts with the best fishing point every hour.
That they may understand this theory, I'll reveal my own secret map about Mindil Beach.

A: Outgoing tide 50-70cm deep water
B: Incoming tide 30-50cm deep water
C: Outgoing tide 50-70cm deep water
D: Incoming tide 30-50cm deep water
E: Incoming tide 30-50cm deep water
F: Outgoing tide 50-70cm deep water
G: Outgoing tide 50-70cm deep water
H: Outgoing tide 50-70cm deep water

After an ideally large-rainfall-wet season, I can catch much more barramundi on lures by land based in Mindil Beach than you expect.

Furthermore, weather conditions influence the results of fishing.
These are negative factors for my land based barramundi fishing.
  • Too much fresh water on shallows
  • Very windy
  • Very wavy
  • Very flat sea surface on shallows
  • Sudden change of water temperature

The good fishing results are usually not  expected under the above conditions.

However, things do not go by theory alone.
It is no great wonder for you to catch barramundi under the above conditions.
Because that's fishing.
But it's by sheer luck, though.

This year's first barramundi #1048 for me
Squidgy Pro Mongrel

Wave after wave surges upon the shore in the rainy season.
I can fish only when wind and wave are modest and their effects are small.
In the first place, it's very difficult to fish by land based on a rainy day in my usual fishing locations.
Such being the case, I could go fishing to Mindil Beach after work on January 10 at last.
I got soaked to the skin while I waded in a very wavy and murky water.
Overhead the moon was shining behind the clouds.
It's the situation to which capturing target barramundi were less likely to be cautious about.
However, barramundi probably wouldn't notice my lures in the very wavy water.
I hoped not to step on stingray or stonefish while wading in the murky water.

I needed a long fishing rod capable of being far cast.
For this purpose, I used a Shimano Terez 7'2".
This white fishing rod was much easier to use than I had expected.
In addition, there were no line troubles at all.
As a lure, I used a Squidgy Pro Mongrel 90mm Rainbow-Fish colour with favorable usability.
As a result, I caught a small barramundi.
It's this year's first barramundi for me.

Why is a large-rainfall-wet season necessary for my usual fishing locations?

Continual heavy rain mainly around the end of December and the beginning of January partly washed away sand and mud that have settled at the bottom of the Ludmilla creek.
It increased about a 15cm water depth of the creek.
That should be welcomed.
Ideally, we need a 10 heavy rainy day period each month in December, January and February.

The creek has become shallower in recent years.
Many rocks that fish were using as a refuge were buried in the sand on the creek bottom.

We cannot see the creek bottom where many silicious marl covering stones that  scatter.

The mullets used as live bait like to eat diatom on silicious marl covering creek-bed or shore-bed stones in a rich natural environment.

After all, the creek bottom became flat and the density of diatom was reduced in recent years.
The reasons were little rain in the rainy season in recent years.

Before anything else, the lack of rain had depressed the large outbreak of jelly-prawns.
Recently, many schools of jelly-prawns cannot be seen everywhere in my usual fishing locations.

That's quite a problem of our barramundi fishing.
Barramundi have no will before jelly-prawns.
They travel around to seek large groups of jelly-prawn several times a year.

Why is a large-rainfall-wet season necessary for my usual fishing locations?
  • We need many rocks that fish are using as a refuge on the creek bottom and the shore bottom.
  • We need much more mullets.
  • We need much more jelly-prawns.

109cm & 114cm in one day
Mr. Alex Patsalides
117cm & 127cm in one day
Mr. George Voukolos Jr

It goes on raining.
The river has risen as a result of the long rain.
They went fishing to catch a metery barramundi immediately before this long rain.
Catching two metery barramundi in one day rarely happens.
It was certainly difficult, but Mr. George Voukolos Jr and Mr. Alex Patsalides managed it somehow or other.
Moreover, they caught those metery barramundi by land based.
George caught 117cm and 127cm barramundi on December 21, 2016.
Alex caught 109cm and 114cm barramundi on December 25, 2016..
As a result, George caught 15 metery barramundi in total in 2016.
However, this result dropped far below that in a normal year in the case of George.

George caught a 117cm barramundi on a DOA Bait Master / Green and Gold colour, and a 127cm barramundi on a Bite Me Barra Wedgies 100mm 1/4oz #5/0 Black and Gold colour.

Alex caught a 109cm barramundi on a DOA Bait Master CokaCola colour.

Alex caught a 114cm barramundi on a Bomber Long 15A / Gold colour.

Fishing and Outdoor World's George Voukolos Sr said that after the record breaking heavy rain, there was a huge outbreak of prawns in Darwin Harbour after Cyclone Tracy.
By this, he and his friend caught more than 80 barramundi at a culvert in the city in one session.
