52cm Barramundi #1148
Barramundi #1149-1150

Sunday of July 22, there was a pretty big bush fire near my place.
I stopped and gazed at those fires.
I remembered that there was not a moment to waste.
If I didn't hurry, I would miss the productive fishing window at Myilly Point rocks.
The best tide shifts with the best fishing point every hour.
There were many rocks covered with oysters in the seawater at Myilly Point.
The seawater was very clear.

Firstly, I used a Rapala XR8 / Glass Ghost colour with upgraded hooks.
It may seem surprising that this small lure is very barramundi.
I used a lot of twitching in my lure action.
As a result, I caught and released a small barramundi.

Secondly, I used a Reidy's Lures Junior B52 / Kryptonite colour.
Reidy's Lures Junior B52 is a lure that any boat-angler who want to catch barramundi knows about.
The hooks were refitted to the light weight one from a heavy weight one for the shallow water.
I used a lot of twitching in my lure action again.
As a result, I caught and released a small barramundi.

I wished to go fishing at Mindil Beach, but I went to Vesteys Beach because the festival was taking place at Mindil Beach.

Finally, I waded in the knee deep water.
The seawater was murky.
I used a Squidgy Pro Mongrel 90mm / Aussie Herring colour.
All I had to do was wind the fishing line on a reel steadily not to catch the rocks covered oysters with my lure in the shallow water.
The lure could be guided to swim to under the water surface.
As a result, I caught and released a 52cm barramundi.

I used a fishing reel having a very high gear ratio 8.2:1 this time.
The very high gear ratio improved the twitching action of the hard body lure during reeling.

The lure to express the movement of an injured and weakened fish

I went fishing at Channel Island on the weekend.
This was the first time in awhile that we had such big tides for came to my usual fishing locations.
The seawater for barramundi's habitation is circulated and activated.
There were four guys fishing in the same water.
One of them was my good fishing friend, Cookie.
He caught two barramundi.

Cookie's 1st barramundi

Cookie's 2nd barramundi

Cookie's successful soft plastic lure.

Craigo is a friend of Cookie.
He caught a barramundi too.

Craigo's successful soft plastic lure.

Cookie and Craigo had some more barramundi's bites on their soft plastic lures.
By contrast, I had no barramundi's bite on my lures.
My pride forbids my acknowledging my defeat, though.
They were better than I was in fishing a barramundi at that time.
The truth was that I have figured out what was happening.
The situation at that time is recorded in a video movie.
From the movie it can be confirmed that the retrieving speed of my lure was slightly faster than their retrieving speed of their lures.
You can see the situation at that time on a new video in my Youtube channel 'charlietomato'.

As you know, I should have produced the irregular floating of the lure to express the movement of an injured and weakened fish.
To realize that, I schedule to use a fishing reel using a low gear ratio next time.

Productive Fishing Window

I hit my little toe against the door frame and my nail was taken off last Thursday.
I am passive in fishing from that day.
I felt that in that case I really ought to answer a question from many readers.
A frequently asked question is "Where is the best fishing spot on weekend?" or "When is the best tide for fishing barramundi on weekend?".
Please use a lot of information and think by yourself.
Although I am acting big, in reality I myself won't know that until right before.
But I know more than just the name of barramundi due to my job.
I keep bringing up the same theory over and over again.
"The best tide shifts with the best fishing point every hour."
Basically, you can fish sea-barramundi in the case of the tide while moving.
Exceptionally, injured barramundi will take lures even in the tide while not moving.
They are frantic to live today.
Statistically speaking, there are some good timings in which an angler is likely to be catching sea-barramundi in the shallow water.

"Productive Fishing Window" is important.
It depends on the fishing point.
The allowed time of the productive fishing window varies according to the fishing point.
It in some places is less than 30 minutes when the tide is coming.
Furthermore, the other conditions influence the results of the land based sea-barramundi fishing in shallow water.
The good fishing results are usually not expected under the following conditions.
  • Very windy
  • Very wavy
  • Very flat sea surface
  • Sudden change of water temperature
  • Too much freshwater
Please don't forget that barramundi are moving about in search of their baits.
In addition, they are very cautious against you.

51cm Barramundi #1147
Trevally #48
Golden Snapper #20
Savage Gear 3D Minnow Twitch 80
Squidgies Fish 80mm

There are a lot windy days lately.
So on windy days, it is not easy to find a fishing location which is suitable for the lure fishing.
The force of the wind was weakened on Saturday morning.
I decided to go fishing to Channel Island by my 150cc scooter depending on the tidal level.
Any tidal level over 2.8m has too much water to access to my usual fishing location there.
By the way, you should always be aware of the risk of a saltwater crocodile attack in all Top End waterways.
It is never 100% safe to enter the water.
Your personal safety is your responsibility.

SAVAGE GEAR provides a hard-body lure to be swum little by little like a small mullet.
This was my first time using a Svage Gear 3D Minnow Twitch 80.

First, an approximately 50cm trevally took its lure in an 1m-deep clear water.

The force in this size trevally is always very strong.

Second, a 51cm barramundi took the same lure at a depth of about 20cm in a murky water.

The sizes being equal, trevally would be more aggressive than barramundi.
I like these fish, but I prefer barramundi as game fish in shallow water.

I changed the lure.
And I caught and released a small golden snapper on Squidgies Fish 80mm Drop Bear colour.

This is about how I spend my Saturday morning in Darwin.
