81cm Barramundi #1051
Squidgy Pro Mongrel

I had sore eyes-ground and a palpitation this afternoon.
In addition, I felt nauseous.
But I started feeling well when I took medicine after dinner.
It just occurred to me that the deadline for the fishing column in Sunday Territorian is tomorrow.
I went out in haste.

It hasn't rained here for two days.
There's no moon.
The sea was wavy.
The sea water was very clear.
I waded in water.
There was no sign of crocodiles???
As a result, I caught a 81cm very heavy barramundi on the 3rd cast on Squidgy Pro Mongrel 90mm Drop Bear at Mindil Beach.

81cm Barramundi / Mindil Beach / February 22, 2017

Probably, this barramundi ended up getting fat because this barramundi has been eating many jelly-prawns.
I measured the length of this fish at home, it was a 81cm barramundi.  Wow!
I thought this fish was 76cm when I caught.
I misread the length of this fish by using a tape measure.
Normally, I don't kill barramundi of 80cm or more because they become a mother-fish.

Mangrovejack #49
Barramundi #1049-1050
Tarpon #16
Squidgy Pro Mongrel
Yo-zuri SS-Minnow

It has stopped raining since yesterday.
After the heavy rains, it takes more than 48 hours before the seawater is back to normal.
Mindil Beach, Fannie Bay and East Point were still very wavy.
I went to a culvert relatively unaffected by the influence of winds.
The moon still hadn't risen.
It's a dark moonless night.

Last time, I got bit by mosquitoes all over this area, and it itched so badly I couldn't stand it.
I wished for protecting from mosquito bite this time.
I saw many mangrove-snakes in the water here about this time last year.
I still remember that well.
Luckily, I didn't see any snakes this time.

I had a short fish-strike every time I cast lure.
But it was very difficult to hook those small fish on lures.
That was where I loosened the drag pressure a lot.
By this, I made a fish take lure away for a little while.
Then I fastened the drag knob in a rush.
As a result, I could catch fish on lures.
  • Mangrovejack x 1
  • Barramundi x 2
  • Tarpon x 1
This method is useful for small fish.

Mullets will be back before long!

Mr. Jack Priore is still my very good friend and a person that I respect.
These are the pictures of the creek in Channel Point that he took.

Before the heavy rains

After the heavy rains

We can see view much sand in a sandy beach in nature from being let flow to cause erosion of the sandy beach.
This phenomenon should be strongly welcomed by local barramundi fishermen.
Of course, we don't need to recondition a sterile sandy beach to a sandy beach rich in sand as before.
These pictures are showing its real appearance of nature or meaning of shore in NT.

It was thought that many small rocks and stones had been buried in the sand for several years because of the poor monsoon.
As you know, mullet like to eat diatom (algae) on the stone in creeks.
So mullets will be back before long.

This monsoon showers big benefits upon this location.
We hope a large outbreak of jelly-prawn too.
However, how it rains!
It is very difficult to fish by land based while it is raining.
I really understand how you feel.
You had a right to be a little annoyed with this true monsoon.

The true monsoon showers benefit upon jelly-prawns, mullets and whitings.

It's was a sunny weather during the rainy season last Sunday.
I went to East Point.
There were some rocks in the tide pool.
My very good fishing friend, Mr. Roderic Pineda was catching bait fish by netting.
He showed me many mullets and whitings he caught there.
We also found many small prawns in a rock crevice at a depth of 50cm.
I could not help laughing at the ease with which  he caught those small prawns.

The length of a large one was close to 70mm.
We call those small prawns 'Jelly prawn' in Darwin.
I didn't see so many jelly-prawns in my usual fishing locations for several years.
This rainy season is going very good so far.
That Sunday was clear for the first time in a long time.

Continual heavy rain mainly around the end of December and the beginning of January partly washed away sand and mud that have settled at the bottom of the mouth of Ludmilla creek in East Point.
It increased about a 15cm water depth of the creek.
That should be welcomed.

The creek has become shallower in recent years.
Many rocks that fish were using as a refuge were buried in the sand on the creek bottom.
We couldn't see the creek bottom where many silicious marl covering stones that  scatter.

After all, the creek bottom became flat and the density of diatom was reduced in recent years.
The reasons were little rain in the rainy season in recent years.

Mullet likes to eat diatom on silicious marl covering creek-bed or shore-bed stones in a rich natural environment.

We found so many mullets in East Point this time.

We found so many whitings too.
