Where to fish the sea barramundi by the tide on our shallows?

We have two tides in direction.
  1. Incoming tide
  2. Outgoing tide

If you understand the sea-barramundi's behavior by the tide, you will catch more barramundis on our shallows.

The outgoing tide is safer than the incoming tide when you fish on our shallows.
Barramundi prefer to make a surprise attack from structures in the outgoing tide especially.
It's the same as bushwhacking guerrillas attacking from ambush.
So try the spot in the outgoing tide as above.

Barramundi swims along by the under-water rock bar and rocks in the outgoing tide especially.
So try the spot as above.

In addition,
Try the small channel with muddy bottom in the outgoing tide.
Try the mouth of the very small creek in the outgoing tide. (The night time  better!)

The sea barramundi attack their bait fish almost as if a big eagle stoop at its prey in the incoming tide on our shallows.
It's not the same as bushwhacking guerrillas attacking from ambush.
It's an act of forcing their way through.
They come from off-shore to water's edge as if the Marine corps establish a shallow beachhead in the front line.
So try the spot in the incoming tide as above.

In addition,
Try the mouth of the very small creek in the incoming tide. (The night time is better!)

Probably not all, but most.

Mr. Matt West is a super master of our barramundi fishing.
Barra Classic 2010 Champion

I was surprised at the famous Alex Julius's column of today's NT News.
His articles are very important to me every time.

Strictly speaking, I was surprised at the pictures of Matt West taken by Mr. Alex Julius this time.

(Picture and comment from Fishing & Outdoor World's Facebook page)

And then a new era will begin!  ヽ(^◇^*)/

Matt West is a super master of our barramundi fishing.

It's very, very hard to win the tournament of Barra Classic.
Matt is the champion of Barra Classic 2010.
The 3rd. place of Barra Classic 2009.

Thank you very much for your giving me very nice advices every time, Matt!

By the way, I sometimes asked Matt to customize my fishing rod.

SHIMANO CALCUTTA 200D is a very effective reel for casting and retrieving SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL.
It's very good for the salt water use.
The drag system is very, very reliable!
Especially shape ideally fits well the 6'6" ST. CROIX 6'6" Medium power, First action, 10-17lb, 1/4-5/8oz.
This above grip of the rod was customized by Matt West.
As a result, it's very beautiful and well-balanced.

I'd like to ask him to customize the other rod before he'll get busy.

Barramundi #823 after work
SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL
Secret spot was out!

We had no rain this afternoon.
I could properly fishing for the first time in a while after work.

There was too wavy all around on our shallows.
I knew a nice spot under the condition like a this afternoon.
The surface of the sea was just wavy, it's very good.
The tide was going.

First, I caught a following barramundi.
It's not a very big fish but still very fun to fish.

Next, I hooked a nice sized, probably 60cm - 70cm, barramundi.
He's shaking his head.
He jumped.
I found young fly fisherman was there.
I was stupid.
I thought that the secret spot and timing had got out. ・゚゚・(×_×)・゚゚・
The young fisherman wasn't bad at all.

And then, the nice sized barramundi escaped from the hook of my lure.
He's gone.

It's essential to fish the nice sized barramundi prudently and calmly.

The above diagram, it's a very effective method for catching a barramundi at the outgoing tide.
Normally, I cast lures toward 'Flat' at the incoming tide.
I always try to find the under-water rockbar  or those rocks at the outgoing tide.

No fishing because of the tropical cyclone.
Rainy season's barramundi fishing
Grilled Barramundi.

We had some good monsoon rains recently.
I won't say that the tropical cyclone is good.
The cyclone itself is dangerous.

We really need many good monsoon rains for our barramundi fishing  in the wet season.
But we don't fish on the shore during a big rain.
Much fresh water stays at the surface of the sea.
It's not good for catching a sea barramundi.

Since we are in the rainy season anglers obviously have to contend with plenty of rain.
It's very hard to find fishes, crabs and aquatic insects living inshore saltwater habitats after a big rain on the land.
Such decomposing vegetation as black leaves, dead branches and dead grass washed in with rain run-off disturb our barramundi fishing very much.
The low salinity levels and dirty water put off the bait and the predators, and drive them away from where they can be easily targeted on foot.
That means it's very hard to catch barramundi on the shore around Darwin city straight after a big rain.
However, barramundi can live in both fresh and salt water.
Therefore we can catch barramundi after a big rain in purely freshwater environments.
This is because we can find bait fishes, frogs, shrimp and crayfish that live in most freshwater habitats even after rain.
It's very hard to find such a freshwater environment in the region of Darwin City.
I still fish the shore when it is rainy, but it is not the ideal time.
In my experience, the best time for catching many good-size saltwater barramundi from the shore in the rainy season is when we have had no rainy for 24 hours.

You can fish barramundi even in a big rain.
There should be some nice sized barramundis off the side of the road, 'Culvert'.
They're feeding on some baits lived in fresh water habitats.
You should know whether the culvert is fresh water origin or salt water origin before fishing.

By the way, I didn't catch any fishes this weekend because of the tropical cyclone.
And so I cooked a grilled barramundi for my own dinner.

Salt, pepper and thyme made me happy.

I'm going on a diet.

A very nice white wine was given by a friend of mine.
☆⌒(*^-゚)v Thanks!!

These many good monsoon rains will bring out the high fish activity.
I'm very sure that we will have a very nice dry season (March - October except for September) for catching barramundi.

I caught a very nice shaped urban barramundi at the mouth of the urban small creek in the dry season because we had had a very good rainy season (2010-2011).

Chonga's cooking
Marinaded steak
Mr. Carlo Chonga Esaquel

I'm going on a diet.

Two weeks ago.
I saw Mr. Mario Clancy Faggion because I was interviewed by a radio-program producer.
Mario is a producer of ABC Tales from Tinny.
I was surprised at Mario.
He became a very healthy-slim man.
He taught me about 'coconut oil diet'.
And he said that Chonga also lost weight of 8kg in 6 weeks.

Fortunately, I was invited to dinner by Chonga last night.
I understood that he lost big weights as well.
He looked very healthy.

Originally, I have known that he is good at cooking.
And I was impressed with his cooking.

It's been the best marinaded steak to me ever!

We enjoyed steak, chicken satay grilled with coconut oil very much.
Yummm!!!
Salad was very, very nice for these steak and satay.

Very nice!

Chonga taught me how to cook it.
I really want to buy this following sauce.

It's a Philippine-style marinade.
Great taste!

Thank you very much, Mrs and Mr Esmaquel.
☆⌒(*^-゚)v Thanks!! Mandy and Chonga!

What lures must you buy?
If you're an extreme beginner.
The minimum number of lures necessary for catching a nice barramundi.

You don't have to buy new fishing rod and reel for catching a nice sized barramundi.
Your old 6' fishing rod and reel should be good for when you first start out.
Once you get some experience you'll want to buy good fishing rod and reel for salt water use-you will feel that good rod and reel are much easier.
Ask at your local tackle store for the best advice.
Also, it is nice to own many different lures.
But to start out you only need a few.

Please buy YO-ZURI SS MINNOW and SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL.

YO-ZURI SS MINNOW has 65mm and 90mm in size.
Please buy a 90mm one because it's easier to cast because you're an extreme beginner.
(I like a 65mm very much.)
Please buy an above green in colour if possible.
(I use many colours because I'm an experienced angler.)
This lure is the most difficult minnow to strike a snag on shallow water.
You just need a steady retrieving.

SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL has 90mm and 115mm in size.
Please buy a 90mm one because you are an extreme beginner.
Please buy an above AUSSIE HERRING in colour if possible.
(I use many colours because I'm not a beginner.)
You need a steady retrieving or a 'stop and go'.

It becomes very easy by practice.

Please find a shallow water with oyster-rocks like an above picture.
  • YO-ZURI SS MINNOW for 30cm - 50cm deep water
  • SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL 50cm - 70cm deep water
You don't need to try any deeper waters.

60cm Urban Barramundi caught with YO-ZURI SS MINNOW 90mm GREEN by land based

85cm Urban Barramundi caught with MONGREL 90mm AUSSIE HERRING by land based

You'll become a experienced angler soon.
And then you'll buy good fishing rod and reel for salt-water use.
GLoomis, ST. CROIX and STELLA should be very nice!
You will feel that good rod and reel are much easier.

However, you'll still keep using YO-ZURI SS MINNOW and SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL.

70cm Urban Barramundi caught with YO-ZURI SS MINNOW 65mm RED WHITE by land based

102cm Barramundi caught with SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL 90mm DROP BEAR by land based

Please use my Scooter Man's Knot (The Slim Straight Knot).

The land based barramundi fishing has many difficult situations as follows,

Pictured by Keith Watson

  1. Very slippery rock-walks
  2. Quick incoming tide
  3. Wading through the shallows
  • Strong water current
  • Muddy bottom
  • Crocodile
  • Shark
  • Stingray
  • Stone fish
  • Box jelly fish
  • Oyster-rocks under the water
The fish window is very small and short by land based.
It's only 15-30 minutes.
You can catch 1 or 2 barramundi at the point.
You must tie the knot as soon as possible.

That's why we need to create a very easy, strong and reliable knot for tying braid line and leader line.
It takes within 2 minutes to tie the Slim Straight Knot (The Scooter Man's Knot) on the shore.
(For reference: The Slim Beauty Knot, The Kaneit Knot and The SHIMANO TV's Knot)

First of all, it is thought that the Slim Straight Knot has already had a good enough strength for hooking and landing a metery barramundi if it's properly made.
(Double braid-lines should be much stronger than single one.)
My greatest concern for the improvement was how to keep these following smaller knots and less loops comparing with The Slim Beauty Knot, The Kaneit Knot and The SHIMANO TV's Knot.

Form a loop and a double overhand knot with the leader line.

Form a double overhand knot with the braid line on the leader line.
And then pull up and tighten the both lines.

Double back parallel to the standing line.
Make a loop by laying tag end over the double line.

Make 8 turns with the tag end around the double line and through the loop.
Must tighten this part as firm as possible until the braid line shows a different colour.
This is the most important procedure.  Use the plier!
If you are not good at tightening this part, the leader line will fell out of the knot easily.

And then pull up each so that the two knots lock up on one another.
Check the loose knots and fasten them tight with the plier.
Finally, trim the knot.

The Slim Straight Knot can make a narrow angled finish.

This narrow angled finish will avoid serious damages of the line guide rings on the fishing rod.
Need some practice to make a narrow angled finish.
An ideal knot for casting lures must be slim and straight!

Please check the knot every 30 minutes.
