Barramundi's field of vision
Bait patterns

I had work the whole time this week.
Unfortunately, I had no time to go fishing.

I took the opportunity to write about barramundi’s field of vision and hunting patterns.
My theories are based on my experiences of catching 890 sea barramundis by land based around our urban shores since 2010.
Of course, you don’t have to agree with my thinking.

Barramundi have a super wide-angle vision therefore they can attack baits by changing
direction of their bodies sideways.

A good sized barramundi is very cautious.
Barramundi will follow a lure and remain neither too close nor too distant from it while they decide if they want to eat it.  But he/she sometimes finally gives up following a lure.
I think that barramundi may be short sighted.

The lateral line is a system of sense organs found in aquatic vertebrates, mainly fish, used to detect movement and vibration in the surrounding water. (Wikipedia)

Barramundi’s vision by itself probably is not brilliant but lateral line is a very, very good sensor to produce a very good reaction.
I think that they can sense a danger to them and the movement of bait fish even in muddy water using their lateral lines.

Sunday
Flat sea surface again!
Barramundi #891
Rockcod #319
HRT LURES MAD MINNOW

Days with flat sea surface in the morning and night have been continuing in Darwin recently.
I can't expect to catch good sized sea barramundi at the flat sea surface on our shallows.
Moreover, a good sized sea barramundi is very cautious in the clear water in the day time.
However, it will be a non-zero possibility that a fickle good sized sea barramundi is caught under the condition of the flat (smooth) sea surface.

The result was as I had expected.

A very small barramundi #891 took HRT LURES Mad minnow.

HRT LURES Mad minnow 70mm is a very good lure.
Of course, I must check the sharpness of hooks as needed.

I sometime adjust tracking by bending the #1 nose eye in the direction the lure needs to go track straight.

I always adjust the these #2, #3 eyes straight up when I caught a good sized barramundi.
These above procedures are very important to my land based sea barramundi fishing.

By the way, I was about to land a good sized sea barramundi with a SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL at the outgoing tide on Saturday afternoon while the sea surface luckily was becoming slightly wavy but I finally lost the fish because I was too impatient.

Friday night
Barramundi #890
HRT LURES MAD MINNOW
What a bummer! We had flat seasurface every night.

What a bummer!
The sea surface was flat again tonight!
In addition, the water was very clear.
There were too many days of the flat sea surface in this winter.

A slightly wavy sea is the best condition for catching sea barramundi on our shallows.

But there was no moonlight.
It's was a very good counter measure against the flat sea surface.

I needed a very good lure for this situation.
HRT LURES Mad minnow was!
(I'm importing some HRT LURES Mad minnows 70mm young mullet's colour from USA and some salt water double hooks from Japan.)

It becomes very important factor to choose the wright bait pattern when we fish in the very clear water.
It should be small mullets there tonight.
I was lucky!
I caught a winter sea barramundi.

A winter sea barramundi is very beautiful.

Barramundi #889
SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL
It is exceptionally very muddy water in the winter season.

The tide was coming in.
It's exceptionally very muddy water in the winter season.
What should I do?
Very easy!
If it's the case, then I can use any lures.
I don't need to consider the bait pattern very much.

As a result,

Sunday afternoon
A boy of 7 caught 5 fishes for about half-hour.
Trevally, Bream and Rockcod
Winter season's fishing.

I went fishing to urban rocks to fit in with incoming tide this afternoon.
Romel and his son, Kodi, were there.
There was a high wind.

I saw many barramundis and trevallies chasing something.
I couldn't find the bait pattern in that case.
I tried some lures but didn't have any good hits.

In contrast to my poor situation, a seven-years-old Kodi was catching some fishes.

Kodi caught 3 trevallies.

Kodi caught a rockcod.

Kodi caught a bream.

I received an e-mail from Romel tonight.

Hi Hiro,

Here are the photos Kodi caught earlier. He is 7 years old. He hates fishing until today when he finally caught these fishes. He was very happy. hehehe

Regards,

Rommel

☆⌒(*^-゚)v Thanks!! Romel.

Finally I caught a small rockcod there.

Saturday night
80cm Barracuda #14
MARIA MJ-1 S110FThe

I was frustrated with deadly flat sea surface in these nights.
Worse, those nights were very moonlit.
The seawater was very clear.
Of course, I didn't catch any sea barramundis.

The cold water itself wasn't very big problem for very experienced and skilled anglers.
But it must be a huge problem for the beginners because the cold temperature brings the very clear water to our shallows.
Good sized barramundis wouldn't bite lures at the sudden water-temperature change.
The stable water temperature is ideal for our fishing.
Even under the condition of a very cold water, they start biting lures once the water temperature became stable again.

Actually, the seawater temperature was falling for the last few days on our shallows.
It's very tough days for catching sea barramundi.
However, the sea surface became slightly wavy this afternoon.
Someone caught a nice sized winter sea barramundi at B's point.
I didn't catch any fish but saw his catching that fish.

I went fishing in the night again.
The sea surface was flat again.
The wind raised when the moon was screened by clouds.
The bait pattern should be a small long tom.
As a result, I caught a 80cm barracuda.
He was a very strong fighter.
The leader line which I used was very good.
I think that it easier to use a mono leader line on our shallows than a fluorocarbon leader line.

The reason why HRT LURES MAD MINNOW 70mm could catch many barramundis in winter.

I caught sea barramundi every night recently.
I used a HRT LURES Mad minnow 70mm with double hooks.
The colour is called as "Fire engine".

It's a very good shallow diving lure, indeed!
Mr. Matt West who was the champion of Barra Classic 2010 gave me this lure as a lure-test.
I think that was four years ago.

First, I understood that it was very good shallow diving lure.
But I caught many rockcods but didn't catch a barramundi on our shallows.

Using double hooks, I could catch sea barramundi every night recently.

Why can HRT LURES Mad minnow with double hooks catch sea barramundi?

"Match the bait"

I took this above picture in April.
These are very young mullets.

These young mullets looked HRT LURES Mad minnow 70mm.

Using double hooks, I could finally unlock the true potential of this lure.
The rear double hook moves so smoothly as they swim around in the seawater.
It looks like a tail fin.
The front double hook looks like pectoral fins.

I need more this above double hooks as soon as possible.

On the other hand, garfish and small longtom are also very nice and effective bait for catching sea barramundi in the winter season.

Winter barramundi #888
HRT MAD MADMINNOW
Under the very difficult condition

There was a strong wind in the daytime.
The clouds completely cleared.
The sea surface was flat and dabbled with strong moon light.
Worse, the seawater was very clear.

Good sized sea barramundis are very cautious.
Many small bait fish were jumping.
But they wouldn't come to the very shallow water.

Somehow I finally caught a small sea barramundi at the urban rocks.
I used very light tackles and so even this small sized one was strong enough for my tackles tonight.

HRT Mad minnow with double hooks did work again.

53cm Winter sea barramundi #887
HRT LURES MAD MINNOW
Double hooks

Even if the sea surface was flat, barramundi normally would take lures in the night.
Nevertheless, they wouldn't take lures when the state of being windless on our shallows.
Once the wind rose, they would take lures again.

It's off the subject, but I prefer the time at which the moon is at first quater when half its face is illuminated to the full moon as follows,

I originally used double hooks for my land based barramundi fishing before and caught many barramundis in those days.
And then I used treble hooks for one year.
Finally I arrived at a conclusion.
Double hooks should be much more effective for catching sea-barramundi by land based than treble hooks.

HRT LURES MAD MINNOW was recommended me by Mr. Matt West who was a champion of Barra Classic 2010.,
That was four years ago.
I have been using it since then.
I thought that it was a very good lure for the shallow waters.
I caught many rockcods but I didn't catch many sea barramundis by using it.

Using double hooks, I could find a true potential of this lure this time.

The rear double hook moves so smoothly as they swim around in the seawater.
It looked a tail fin.
The front double hook looked pectral fins.

Basically this lure swims at the slightly deeper depth range of the water to compare with the other shallow diving lures.
Using double hooks, this lure was able to produce a very effective action as a "Touch and GO" to many rocks for the barramundi fishing while swimming in the shallow water.

Unfortunately, we can't find the above double hooks in Darwin.
I must import OWNER Cultiva Stinger Double Hooks from Japan.

As a result, I caught a very solid winter sea-barramundi tonight.

It should be nicer to barramundi than using treble hook.
Less damages.

62cm Barramundi #884-886
HRT LURES MAD MINNOW
Winter is the best season for very skilled barramundi anglers but very difficult season for beginners because of its very clear seawater.

Winter game has just started!

The seawater clarity becomes very clear.
The fish window becomes very short.

But sea barramundi itself becomes very attractive.
The body colour becomes beautiful silver-white.
The body becomes very solid and muscular.
The action becomes very aggressive.
That's winter versions of the sea barramundi on our shallows.
They are very tough proposition.
I think that super fishos and very skilled anglers love those above situations.
That is the place for them to show or try their skills.

On the contrary, beginners will be at a loss how to fish in the very clear water.

"And I suppose",
Winter should be the best season for very skilled barramundi anglers and super fishos.
On the other hand, winter should be very difficult season for beginners by land based barramundi fishing.

I caught a 62cm very aggressive urban sea-barramundi and two small barramundis tonight.
HRT lure is originally easy to snag oyster-rocks on our shallows.
Using double hooks, HRT lure became a very good shallow diving lure.
It automatically produced a very effective "Touch and GO" action in the shallow water.
In addition, the double hooks looked the fish-fins.

I used many lures with treble hooks last year.
I could compare with each other.
I'm very sure that the double hooks are much more effective for catching many barramundis than the treble hooks on our shallows.

62cm urban sea-barramundi hasn't changed its body colour into silver-white as its winter version yet.  But it's a very good fish.

I recommend the above double hooks.
Very good for the salt water fishing.
