Queenfish #23
YO-ZURI SS-MINNOW
Only one productive fishing window

The tides on March 29:
06:54am 3.12m
13:32pm 5.33m
20:48pm 4.88m

It had rained the day before.
There was bit of freshwater remaining in the sea on shore.
I went to Myilly Point rocks to fish in the morning.
The productive fishing windows were not many today.
There would be only one window just after the lowest tide in the morning.
That window was wide enough for my land-based fishing.
Fortunately, the sea was nicely rippled and very clear.
I had two short strikes from barramundi but couldn’t hook them.
Finally, I caught a queenfish on Yo-zuri SS-minnow at the very shallow water.
The water was only 20cm deep where I was casting. I used very light fishing reel and rod and so I enjoyed handling about five minutes pulling of the fish very much.

Flathead #52
YO-ZURI SS-MINNOW
Very high-class sashime cusine

Special sashimi cuisine "Kobu-jime"

I caught a 42cm flathead on Yo-zuri SS-minnow on March 28.
Normally, Darwin's flathead is not very rich taste to compare with flathead in the coldwater.
So I made a very special sashimi cuisine with a tastily eatable method.

Sprinkle sea-salt on fish

Dried Kobu (Konbu) is a type off seaweed called kelp.

Wipe kobu with vinegar and put some sliced gingers on kobu

Place fish on kobu

Fish are sandwiched between pieces of kobu for few hours to transfer its flavor to the fish, which is called kobujime.

Kobujime is normally eaten at the high-class Japanese restaurant.

Barramundi #936-937
The productive fishing windows were wide.

The tides on march 28 as follows,
05:39am 2.67m
12:01pm 5.60m
18:19pm 3.99m
23:39pm 4.91m

I thought that I had to go fishing just after 5:39am when I saw the above tide schedule.
It had rained yesterday.
There would be quite a bit of freshwater remaining in the sea at the Mindil Beach.
So I went to the Fannie Bay to fish.
I may safely say that this is the most approved way.
The sea was nicely rippled and very clear.
It was very easy to wade through the shallow water.
The productive fishing windows were wide.

I caught a barramundi on popper first.

Barramundi #935
Things can move fast
Sebile Swingtail minnow

Things can move fast

The tides of March 21 were as follows:
00:50am 1.24m
06:47am 7.61m
13:02pm 1.07m
19:06pm 7.89m

What actually happens in my fishing locations when the state of the difference between high and low tide is very great?
The currents caused by tides also become greater.
The sea water goes out, and comes in, more rapidly than during a neap tide.
The sea changes quickly from one state or condition to another in my fishing locations.
The best tide shifts with the best fishing point every hour.
That means that the greater tide is, the narrower productive fishing windows become.
Even in such a situation though, the fish window around the high tide becomes comparatively wide. That depends on each fishing location though.
That’s reason why I went to the Mindil Beach to fish in the early morning on March 21.
Fortunately, the sea was nicely calm and rippled.
I tried to use a new lure that I have never tried from Sebile.
The structure of this lure can be used for obtaining a powerful vibration to improve the fish attracting effect.
As a result, I caught and released a small barramundi.

Barramundi #934
The rainy season is coming to its end little by little.
SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL

The sea wasn't very wavy for the first time in a long time this evening.

The rainy season is coming to its end little by little.
We had no rain for two days but shortly hard rain this afternoon around my usual fishing locations.
The salinity of the sea water seemed to be returning at an urban shore.
But many long spear-shaped seeds of mangrove were drifting in the sea.
A sea barramundi doesn't like rubbish such as floating rubbish in the sea water.
Those seeds are not rubbish though.
I cast my lure for the clean water without many seeds.
I had a short striking and so loosened the drag pressure as much as possible.
As a result, I caught a small barramundi there.

Rockcod #325
Weather makes waves.

Much rain has fallen this wet season.
The rainy season is coming to its end little by little.
The sea, however, is very wavy every day.

I went to East Point, Lee Point, Mindil Beach and Fannie bay to fish this weekend.
It was very wavy everywhere.
I went to Buffalo Creek too.
There was a big rain just before my arrival and so much fresh water there.
I saw many fish-baits but I didn’t catch any fish.
Nobody caught any fish around me.
I only caught a rock cod at the beginning of the incoming tide on Saturday morning.
I left home in the gray of the morning.
I waded through the shallow water to the old-man rocks.
The sea wasn’t very wavy. The rocks are less than 3m above sea level around there in any season.
I hooked two small barramundi using a Yo-zuri SS-minnow but couldn’t land them.

8 Mar 2015

The garpes are sour.
I had no chance to catch a barramundi today.

I had no choice but to go to my usual fishing locations.
The grapes are sour.
To tell the truth, I wanted to go to the Shady Camp to fish.
As you know, I have no boat.
I don't have even a car.
It has rained in this wet season.
Much more rain has fallen than last year.
It will shower benefits upon us later.
But it is now in the very hard condition to fish in my usual fishing locations.
I'm steadfastly being patient about that.

I still fish the shore when it is rainy, but it is not the ideal time.
In my experience, the best time for catching many good-size saltwater barramundi from the shore in the rainy season is when we have had no rainy for 24 hours.

We had had no rain for 24 hours until that time.
The circumstances today were different to usual circumstances.
Normally, the sea water doesn't leave after an ebb tide around this area.
That means that a substantial amount of water has left in the ground.
It should be a fresh water.
Though even that, you know, is far from explaining all.
The freshwater will move upward when the tide flows because the freshwater is lighter than the saltwater.
This situation is not easy to keep on living for the marine small animals.
Their activities should be very low.
This situation is not easy to keep on living for those sea barramundi.

A barramundi can live in a blackish water too.
Separately from the normal life cycle of barramundi, some sea barramundi spend their life times, almost from their birth, in the sea.
Some barramundi travel back and force between both situations.

In addition, a sea barramundi doesn't like rubbish such as floating rubbish in the sea water.

The tides were not very bad for this fishing location today,
The sea wasn't very wavy.
But I had no chance to catch a barramundi in my usual fishing locations again.
The grapes are sour.

Land-based big barra
122 cm and 129cm Barramundi
Mr. George Voukolos Jr

What do you think this following data is?

2010 42
2011 33
2012 36
2013 29
2014 23
2015 6

Mr. George Vokoulos Jr has caught 169 metrey barramundi land-based since 2010.
I leaned how to fish in Darwin from George in 1989.
I wanted to learn how to fish those metrey barramundi from him also.
I asked him to give me some information about his metrey barramundi so far.

And I received his text as follows.

“I use 30lb Suffix, sometimes use live bait... If I have 2... Hiro, hard for me to explain? When you have done it for almost 44 years it is just instinct in how I retrieve or work my hard bodies, and rubbers... Mixture of fast, slow, and the sudden stop ’n’ drop!”

Thanks, George!

George went to his fishing location on February 25 and got six barramundi 65-70cm and 122cm. Caught and released. George went back to his fishing location on February 27 and got two barramundi 82cm and 129cm. Caught and released.

By the way, I received two videos from him to my smart phone but I couldn't put them on my blog technically.
