29 Mar 2013

We're writing fishing columns on the newspaper. But we couldn't catch any barramundis today.
With Mr. Shannon Holopainen
Rockcod #269 and Shannon's flathead

We had a big rain and are having a small rain now.
I didn't expect that I could catch many barramundis around the city today.

I usually think as follows,
Since we are in the rainy season anglers obviously have to contend with plenty of rain.
It's very hard to find fishes, crabs and aquatic insects living inshore saltwater habitats after a big rain on the land.
Such decomposing vegetation as black leaves, dead branches and dead grass washed in with rain run-off disturb our barramundi fishing very much.
The low salinity levels and dirty water put off the bait and the predators, and drive them away from where they can be easily targeted on foot.
That means it's very hard to catch barramundi on the shore around Darwin city straight after a big rain. However, barramundi can live in both fresh and salt water.
Therefore we can catch barramundi after a big rain in purely freshwater environments.
This is because we can find bait fishes, shrimp and crayfish that live in most freshwater habitats even after rain.
It's very hard to find such a freshwater environment in the region of Darwin City.
I still fish the shore when it is rainy, but it is not the ideal time.
In my experience, the best time for catching many good-size saltwater barramundi from the shore in the rainy season is when we have had no rainy for 24 hours.

On the other hand, you can fish barramundis even in a big rain.
There should be some nice sized barramundis off the side of the road, 'Culvert'.
They're feeding on some baits lived in fresh water habitats.
And you should know whether the culvert is fresh water origin or salt water origin before fishing.

However, it, by any chance, I should catch a nice sized barramundi, what should I do?
So I chose a very strong fishing tackles today.  o(*^▽^*)o

Reel: SHIMANO CURADO 300E 7kg drag-powers
Rod: SHIMANO JEWEL621 BARRA BC 6-10kg

Normally, a bait-cast reel doesn't need 7kg drag-powers for a meter barramundi.
Bait-cast reel itself has a very strong power.
The torque is much greater than the spinning reel.
It's thought that the 4kg drag-powers should be good enough for a bait-cast reel.

Surprisingly, there is a very worthy of special mention.
The above combo of reel and rod is the best tackle that I can cast the longest distance of all bait-cast tackles of mine.
Probably, I can catch and land a 130cm barramundi up! ♪~( ̄。 ̄)

But, as a result, I only caught a rockcod after all.
No barramundi!

Lure: SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL / RAINBOW FISH 90mm

Fortunately, I had a very able and reliable fishing friend today.
Mr. Shannon Holopainen has his own fishing column on NT News same as me.

Shannon's SHIMANO STELLA has a very special handle with a wooden grip.
Wooden grip is much better than soft rubber one.
Soft rubber is easily damaged by lubricant and repellent.

Shannon caught a flathead.

Shannon's lure.  Very nice!

Even Shannon couldn't catch a barramundi under the condition like this around the city today.
But we must not jump to conclusions.
We might catch a meter barramundi under the condition like this.
Just in case!
We'll go fishing under the condition like this again.

Sunday afternoon
57cm Keeper Barramundi #762
BOMBER LONG 15A

The tides were good today.
The salt water condition here wasn't very bad at that moment.
The best tide shifts with the best fishing point every hour.
I came this point from the other rocks.

The surface of the sea was slightly rippled.
So it was thought that Barramundi wouldn't take soft plastic swimming shads here.
I chose a hard body lure (Shad minnow type).

I will talk only about Barramundi as follows,
Barramundi aren't, probably, convinced that they can catch very healthy live bait fish under the condition of 'Flat surface'.
Barramundi  are convinced that they can catch weakened or troubled live bait fish under the condition of 'Flat surface'.
Barramundi  are comparatively convinced that they can catch healthy live bait fish under the condition of 'Very rippled-Wavy surface' in the nature world.
On the other hand, Barramundi make a surprise attack from structures under the condition of 'Flat surface'.
It's same as bushwhacking guerrillas attacking from ambush.

We use 'Soft plastic swimming shads' in place of very healthy live bait fish.
So we use 'Soft plastic swimming shads' with a steady retrieving.
We use 'Hard body minnows' in place of weakened or troubled live bait fish.
So we use 'Hard body minnows' with some twitchings and pauses.

As a result,
Barramundi won't take 'Soft plastic swimming shads' under the condition of 'Flat surface'.

I used Gold Bomber under the condition of 'Slightly rippled'.
As a result,
I caught a 57cm very nice keeper sized Barramundi here.

Trevally and Tarpon will take 'Soft plastic swimming shads' under the condition of 'Flat surface' with quick twitchings.

Saturday night
53cm exciting urban Barramundi #761
SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL

We had a strong rain this afternoon.
The rain itself was essential to maintain our properly seasonal environment in our state.
It's an absolutely essential factor for our Barramundi fishing from a long-term stand point.
But, in the shortest term, we want to go fishing all the time, we can't expect any good results just after a big rain, much less calm water.

I went to see the condition of the sea around 6:00 pm.
The surface of the sea was flat.
It's very bad!

However, there would be a bright moon tonight.
I came back to the same rocks around 7:30 pm.
I was very lucky!
The surface of the sea had become slightly wavy.

I t was thought that the chance of catching a Barramundi should be very small tonight.
I shouldn't waste this water-field with haphazard lure-castings.

Very important first cast!  No bite.
The 2nd. cast!  No bite.
The 3rd. cast!  I got one!

It's not a keeper.
But 53cm is a very good enough size that we can enjoy the world best game fishing by land based.

SQUIDGY FISH is one of the best lures on the shallow water.
It's slightly difficult to control its swimming actions.
I need a very nice rod for SQUIDGY FISH because the sensitive rod-tip itself can put very effective actions on to SQUIDGY FISH.

SQUIDGY PRO MONGREL is a really good fun-lure!
It's very easy to control its swimming actions with rod angles and retrieving speeds.
Beginner-friendly lure!

Fly rod and reel
From Mr. Dave Krantz

I'm interested in Fly fishing now.

I'm learning it from Mr. Leigh Eldridge.
I received his first lesson on March 10.
I'll take an another lesson on Sunday.

Mr. Dave Krantz is an able editor of my fishing column of NT News.
He also gave me an opportunity to catch my first metery Barramundi on Helifish.
And he gave me a nice fly fishing tackles this evening.
That's a very good timing to me!

 ☆⌒(*^-゚)v Thanks!! Dave.

Very nice rod holder too!
